How to fix 0x00000050 errors in Windows 10

If you’re seeing 0x00000050 errors that means you’re also seeing the Blue Screen of Death. The full syntax will likely include ‘PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA’ and ‘0x00000050’. While you may be seeing a BSOD, this error isn’t a showstopper so there is no need to panic.

A PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA error is where a driver or program tries to access system memory it shouldn’t. This is predominantly a software issue and can be rectified fairly easily. As always with troubleshooting Windows errors, it can be a process of elimination to get it right.

Fix 0x00000050 errors in Windows 10

The first thing to do is consider whether you have added any RAM to your computer or installed any software just before you began seeing the error. Typically, a change of configuration causes 0x00000050 errors so this is the first place to look.

Consider any changes of hardware of software in your computer.
Reverse those changes by removing hardware or uninstalling the software.
Reboot your computer and retest.

In the vast majority of cases, simply reversing the change remedies the situation. Once you know why the error is occurring you can do something about it. Whether that is getting a more up to date version of the software or checking hardware will depend on the situation.

If you haven’t added any hardware or software to your computer, check Windows and program updates in case something happened behind the scenes.

Navigate to Settings and Update & security.
Click the Update history text link.
Look for any updates successfully installed before the error began occurring.
Click the Uninstall updates link at the top of the window if any updates occurred within the time.
Reboot your computer and retest. If the test was successful, stop the update that caused the issue.

If you’re still seeing 0x00000050 errors, it could be your antivirus software as they are prime candidates for memory errors.

Boot into Safe Mode using the F8 key during boot or your Windows 10 installation media.
Uninstall your security software.
Reboot into normal mode and retest. If your computer no longer errors, try an updated version of the software or a different one and retest.

If your computer still errors, it isn’t antivirus. The good news is that if your computer works in Safe Mode, it is definitely a program you have installed on your machine.

Type ‘services’ into the Search Windows (Cortana) box and select Services.
Disable any third-party services installed by your programs and any services not labeled Microsoft.
Reboot your machine and retest.

Your computer should now be working normally. Now it is just a matter of enabling services one by one until the error occurs again. When it does, revisit the service you most recently enabled and check its version. Update or uninstall as you see fit.

As mentioned, a lot of Windows troubleshooting is a process of elimination. While the final step will be time consuming and laborious, it is the only way to find out the cause of the error if all other steps don’t work.
