How To Catch Mewtwo in Pokemon Go

Mewtwo is one of the most popular Legendary Pokemon in the series’ history. There were movies made focusing on its origins and often portraying how powerful it is. In Pokemon GO, Mewtwo is also incredibly powerful and hard to catch.

How To Catch Mewtwo in Pokemon Go

Before you can catch Mewtwo, you need to learn how to defeat it. A lot of preparation and strategizing is required to capture it successfully since it is a Legendary Pokemon. Below is a general overview of Mewtwo.

Mewtwo Overview

As we mentioned, Mewtwo is a Legendary Pokemon, which are all inherently stronger and can endure a lot of punishment from other Pokemon. As such, not everyone will be able to catch it.

Mewtwo is Psychic-type. Like all Pokemon types, it has a weakness to at least one other type. In the case of Psychic, this type loses to Bug, Dark, and Ghost types.

If you want to have an easier time catching Mewtwo, we strongly recommend you bring your most powerful Pokemon with at least one of these types.

On the flip side, being Psychic-type allows Mewtwo to resist Fighting and Psychic-type attacks. As such, try to avoid these two types as they won’t be as effective as Mewtwo’s weaknesses or even the neutral types.

In terms of stats, Mewtwo has a maximum Combat Power (CP) of 4178. Its other stats start from 300 Attack, 214 Stamina, and 182 Defense.

You can quickly tell that Mewtwo is going to be hard to weaken and catch with a Pokeball. Other than bringing the strongest Pokemon with either Bug, Dark and Ghost types, supplies like candy and better Pokeballs will give you an edge.

How to Catch Mewtwo

Mewtwo is a raid boss that only comes out during events. And events don’t happen very often, which is why you can’t catch Mewtwo now.

The most recent way to catch Mewtwo was to join the Pokemon GO Tour: Kanto Event. It ran on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There were more than 100 Pokemon from the Kanto Region to catch, but many of them were locked behind a paywall.

Despite this, all Trainers could encounter four possible raid bosses, even if they didn’t pay. One of them is Mewtwo, and if you manage to run into it, consider yourself very lucky. Even so, you have to be prepared to fight it and win before you can catch it.

The general steps were as follows:

  1. Launch Pokemon GO during the event.
  2. Coordinate a Raid with friends or nearby people.
  3. Confront Mewtwo.
  4. Try to weaken Mewtwo.
  5. Catch Mewtwo with a Pokeball.
  6. If everything goes right, you’ll get Mewtwo successfully.

To catch Mewtwo, you need an EX Raid Pass. To get such as pass, you need to have an excellent record in Raid Battles, constantly winning them. Once you get the pass, you can coordinate with nearby Trainers and work together to catch Mewtwo.

Generally, you need around three to four Trainers to catch Mewtwo, but having more won’t hurt.

Until Niantic decides to release more events, catching Mewtwo is impossible. That said, it’s a good idea to keep up with Pokemon GO news. Maybe the next event is right around the corner?

Below are some more details and metagame data to help you understand the best ways to catch Mewtwo.

Useful Information

According to calculations from Pokebattler, a website that helps Trainers calculate the best counters against certain Pokemon, there are several Pokemon that can effectively counter Mewtwo. These Pokemon also need to have specific moves in their moveset. Here’s the list:

  • Shadow Tyranitar equipped with Bite and Crunch
  • Origin Forme Giratina equipped with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Chandelure equipped with Hex and Shadow Ball
  • Darkrai equipped with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Shadow Houndoom equipped with Snarl and Foul Play
  • Mega Gengar (Shadow Claw, Shadow Ball)
  • Shadow Mewtwo equipped with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
  • Mega Houndoom equipped with Snarl and Foul Play
  • Mega Gyarados equipped with Bite and Crunch
  • Shadow Weavile equipped with Snarl and Foul Play

For Mega Houndoom, Mega Gengar, and Mega Gyarados, you can only have one Mega Evolved Pokemon out at once. The best choice among the three is Mega Gengar, but if you don’t have a Mega Gengar, the other two are acceptable substitutes.

Getting these Pokemon might be difficult, so much so that we can’t blame even the top players for not having them. A lot of time and effort is needed to get the above Pokemon into fighting shape, enough to go toe-to-toe with Mewtwo.

Instead, we have another solution. Here’s a list of non-Shadow and non-Mega Pokemon you can bring along with you to take Mewtwo down. These Pokemon are easier to obtain and might be the key to victory for any Trainer.

  • Genesect equipped with Fury Cutter and X-Scissor
  • Regigigas equipped with Ghost-type Hidden Power and Giga Impact
  • Houndoom equipped with Snarl and Foul Play
  • Absol equipped with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Banette equipped with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Mewtwo equipped with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
  • Weavile equipped with Snarl and Foul Play
  • Hydreigon equipped with Bite and Dark Pulse
  • Tyranitar equipped with Bite and Crunch
  • Gengar equipped with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Burn Drive Genesect equipped with Fury Cutter and X-Scissor

To grant you a better chance of catching Mewtwo, use the Circle Lock Throwing Technique for your Pokeballs and use Golden Razz Berries.

One in 20 Mewtwos is a Shiny Pokemon, just like all other Legendary Pokemon. Mewtwos with perfect stats, or 100% IV, will have 2387 CP usually. In good weather conditions, it goes up to 2984.
