X’s (formerly Twitter’s) very own chatbot assistant, Grok AI, is a much-used tool on the social media platform. As of February 2025, and the release of Grok 3, the tool is now free to use for all users with an account.
It’s good news for all, but you might be wondering how to make use of this tool. That’s what this article is here to help with.
Grok AI for Free Now
Grok AI was first launched way back in November 2023, at first only available to Premium X users. Today, we’re three versions in and all users can now benefit from the chatbot’s functionality. You might be wondering what Grok offers to users. Some features include:
- Real-time access to data, including X’s vast feeds
- A little bit more personality and humor than your average chatbot
- DeepSearch that provides reasoning with steps and sources included
- DeeperSearch which provides even more thorough searches and reasoning
- Faster response times than previous versions
- Faster logical response times than GPT – 4.0 and DeepSeek
Just like every chatbot, though, Grok AI is still liable to occasionally hallucinate and fudge details. This isn’t as big a problem as it once was, but can still occur.
Grok 3 does limit its free plan for now. Users are allowed 10 text prompts, 10 image generations every two hours, and three image analyses per day.
So where do Premium users fit in? Well, even though Grok AI is now free to all Premium and Premium+ users, everyone can still gain access to increased Grok usage in addition to bonus features and early access to any new ones, such as voice input.
How to Use Grok AI Without Paying
We’re going to keep things free in this demonstration to show the amount you can get done with Grok AI without forking out anything. Let’s start with the chat features:
Chat Input
When you first land on Grok AI, you’ll see an open dialog box just waiting for your input. It’ll also provide some trending topics if you need a little help:
Step 1. Enter your prompt or query into the dialog box.
Step 2. Choose your Grok model to process the input by selecting either “DeepSearch” or “DeeperSearch” from the dropdown menu underneath.
Step 3. Click the Submit button (the arrow) when done.
Step 4. Grok will return the results. You can regenerate the answer by clicking the “Regenerate” icon below the text.
Step 5. Like or dislike the response to help tailor Grok’s responses in the future. The Dislike menu will prompt you to explain your problem with the answer.
Upload Files
Grok AI supports the ability to process numerous files, from images to PDFs and spreadsheets. The “Attach” icon in the dialog box – indicated by the paperclip – allows you to upload files. Simply click it and choose any file to upload. Keep in mind that it can only process up to 20,000 words and files of up to 1GB.
Image Generation
Right below the dialog box, you’ll see the option to generate or edit images. If you’re creating one:
Step 1. Click the “Create Images” button underneath the dialog box.
Step 2. Type a prompt for what you’d like to generate – the more accurate and detailed, the better. Grok generates some ideas in a menu below the dialog to give you some inspiration.
Step 3. Once done, click the “Submit” button.
Step 4. Two images will be generated. You can regenerate them, save them, or edit them in Grok AI.
Step 5. If editing, simply enter a prompt into the new dialog box explaining what you’d like changed.
