Can You Tell if Someone Muted You in Instagram? Nope!

When you “mute” someone on the social networking app Instagram, you’re basically hiding their posts and stories from your feed. This is a great solution for Instagram users who want to unfollow another user, but for some reason can’t. Instagram gives you the option to mute someone’s posts or Stories, or both.

However, when you mute someone, can they tell? In this article, we’ll explain what happens when you mute someone on Instagram. In addition, we’ll show you how to mute another Instagram user when you don’t want to see their content.

Can You Tell if Someone Muted You in Instagram?

Muting someone on Instagram isn’t the same as unfollowing them. When you mute an Instagram user, you won’t be able to see anything they post, whether it’s a Story or a post. The same goes if somebody mutes you, as your content won’t appear on their feed.

However, if you want to see what they’ve been doing recently, you’d be able to see everything on their profile (except for Stories, since they disappear after 24 hours). Likewise, if that person were to tag you in a post or a Story, you’d still get a notification, no matter who muted who.

Instagram came up with the mute feature for situations when you don’t want to see someone’s content, but you can’t unfollow them. Similarly, if you want to continue messaging someone but you aren’t interested in what they’re posting, you can simply hide them from your feed. If you change your mind, you can unmute them just as easily.

However, the main question is: If someone muted you on Instagram, would you be able to tell? Since Instagram values its users’ privacy, they won’t be notified if you mute them. Therefore, there is no certain way of knowing if someone muted you.

Even though you can’t be 100% sure that you were muted, there are signs that point to this. For example, if you noticed that someone suddenly stopped liking your posts or viewing your Stories, this might mean that they muted you. Though with Instagram’s algorithm constantly changing, this may not be the case. In other words, if you don’t update your profile regularly by uploading posts and Stories a few times a week, it’s highly likely that half of your followers won’t see them when you do.

There is one trick worth trying to see if someone muted you, but it only works with Instagram Stories, and only if you want to focus on one person. To see if someone muted your Stories, you’re going to create a “Close Friends” list, and only add that one person. Here’s how it’s done:

Open Instagram on your phone.
Go to your profile picture in the bottom-right corner. This will take you to your profile.
Tap on the three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner of your screen.
Select “Close Friends” from the menu.
If you already have a Close Friends list, tap on the “Remove All” button.
In the “Search” bar, enter the username of the person that might have muted you. You’re only going to add that one person.
Post a Story to your “Close Friends” list.

Now all you need to do is wait. Keep in mind that you’re not supposed to tag them, as they will be notified immediately. If 24 hours pass and your Story disappears, and they didn’t open it, this could be a sign that they muted you. As mentioned before, there is no way of being certain. Perhaps they just didn’t use Instagram in that time range.

If you’re wondering where you can find all the people you muted (as you will probably forget about half of them), this is where they’re located:

1. Go to your profile.

2. Tap on the three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner of the screen.

5. Go down to “Muted Accounts.”
