How To Add a New Line in WeChat

WeChat is still gathering pace over WhatsApp and Kik as it is so easy to use and has neat features like Moments. Plus, if all your friends are using it, you need to use it too. If you’re new to WeChat, you may have noticed that you have trouble adding a line break in the app. This tutorial will show you how to add a new line in WeChat and some other neat tricks too.

How To Add a New Line in WeChat

WeChat may have begun in China but it has been completely adopted by the west too. There are millions of users and while many are Asian, there are also many westerners who have taken on WeChat as their own. I count myself as one of them. Not because I needed another chat app in my life but because friends and acquaintances were all shifting over to it. If I didn’t, I would have been left behind.

If you find yourself in the same position, you’re going to need a little help getting to grips with how this app works. This tutorial will help.

Adding a new line to chat

By default, WeChat uses the Enter key to send your message. That’s great if you want to keep things simple but if you needed to add a line break to a longer message, this could present problems. You can change it though.

  1. Open WeChat on your phone and select the Me tab.
  2. Select the cog icon to access settings.
  3. Select Chat and toggle Press Enter to Send switch to the Off position.

Now when you hit the Enter button or key, it will add a line break instead of just sending the message. To send the message you will have to hit Send instead.

Now that’s sorted, let us make WeChat even easier to use!

Silence in-app sounds in WeChat

If you use the app a lot, the continuous alerts when chats arrive or a new Moment is posted is going to get old fast. The good news is that you can silence the app without having to silence your entire phone.

  1. Open WeChat on your phone and select the Me tab.
  2. Select the cog icon to access settings.
  3. Select Notifications and toggle Sound and/or In-App Vibrate to off.

Now you will just have to keep an eye on the notification light on your phone to see new messages or activity in WeChat. It makes the app much easier to use on a daily basis and easier to use while at work or school too.

Set an availability timer in WeChat

A very cool but often overlooked feature of WeChat is the availability timer. This controls the times of day when the app can notify you about activity. So if you don’t want to silence the app altogether but need it to be quiet during work or study, you can set the app to not alert you during those times.

  1. Select Settings from within WeChat.
  2. Select Notifications and Notification Timing.
  3. Disable All Day to allow the timer to be set.
  4. Select Start and set the time.
  5. Select Done and End to save the settings and enable the timer.

This is a very neat feature that is useful in all kinds of situations. If you have an international social circle, you can set this so you get a good night’s sleep too!

Disable find me by phone number

Depending on how you use social media, being found by your phone number means anyone who has that number can find and follow you on WeChat. That’s usually fine but you may have people you want to keep separate so it’s useful to turn this function off.

  1. Select Settings from within WeChat.
  2. Select Privacy and toggle Find Me by Phone Number to off.

Now anyone with your phone number who uses WeChat won’t automatically see you and want to be friends.

Trigger confetti

Triggering confetti is either incredibly popular or not used at all depending on your social circle. If yours uses it, you need to know how to join in. confetti is triggered by certain words, use one in chat and confetti will appear on the screen.

Those words are: Happy New Year, Merry Christmas, Happy Easter, Train, Money, Birthday, Miss You and Flower. There may be others but those are the ones that I know work.

Now you know how to add a new line in WeChat and a few other neat things with the app. If you’re playing catchup with your friends, it should now be a little easier.
