How To Add and Change Ringtones on the iPhone 6S

While they aren’t used by as many people as they used to be back in the days of the flip phones, ringtones are still something that many people have on their device and use each and every day. While you will often hear vibrations or see silenced phones these days, there is still a market for a ringtone to alert you when you are getting called or getting a notification. While they can be noisy and annoying sometimes, there is no better or easier way to know when you get a text, call or notification.

How To Add and Change Ringtones on the iPhone 6S

This article will look at both how to add ringtones to your iPhone 6S, and how to change your ringtone if you want a new sound. Before looking at how to add your own ringtones to the iPhone (which is a longer process), we will take a look at how to change your ringtone. No one wants the same ringtone sound for years, so it is a good idea to figure out how to change them (thankfully, it is fairly easy and quick to do). Of course, you want to make sure your phone’s volume is up a bit and your phone isn’t on silent mode, or else changing these ringtones won’t matter as you won’t be able to hear them anyways. Once all of that is figured out, it is time to learn how to change your ringtone.

How to Change Your Ringtone on the iPhone 6S

Step 1: Click the Settings app from the home screen.

Step 2: Tap the Sounds button.

Step 3: Once there, hit the Ringtone button.

Step 4: From here, you will be able to see a list of your available ringtones to use. Simply, click on the one you want to use, and that’s it! You have now changed your ringtone.

In addition to changing your ringtone, you can also change a wide range of other sounds on the exact same page as where you change the ringtone. Whether you want to change the sound when you receive a text, the sound when you get an email or virtually anything else, it can all be done in a few clicks at most. This is a great addition as this allows you to set different alert tones for different alerts, so you always know what to expect when your phone goes off.

Now that you know how to change from one ringtone to another, let’s take a look at how to add new ones if you so choose.

How to Add Ringtones to Your iPhone 6S

Whereas many people used to have their favorite song as their ringtone, the iPhone 6S and many other devices come with a ton of default and pre-loaded tones you can choose from. But if these don’t tickle your fancy, there is the opportunity to add your on ringtones to the iPhone 6S. You can purchase ringtones directly from the Ringtones menu (with the Store button at the top right corner), or can go to the iTunes store and purchase them as well.

There are also some apps that exist that you can get from the App Store which will contain a variety of different ringtones to use on your iPhone 6S. However, even still, you may not be able to find the ringtone you really want to use. However, it is a good idea to try out the apps first as adding a ton of different ringtones to the device on your own can be a lengthy process.  If you tried the apps out and still found nothing, you will have to add the ringtones yourself. But in order to actually add a ringtone to your iPhone 6S, you have to jump through a few hoops. Even still, the process isn’t too difficult.

Step 1: Open iTunes and select a song you want to snip to create a ringtone. (a ringtone can only be 30 seconds long).

Step 2: Right-click on the song and hit Get Info, and then Options. There you will see a Start and Stop, which let you pick where you want your ringtone to start and stop (remember to make it under 30 seconds).

Step 3: Then create an AAC version of your song, so you will now have the original and the AAC. You can now change the original version back to its original length.

Step 4: Right-click the AAC version of the song and select Show in Folder, and then in the Finder Folder, select the song and hit Get Info.

Step 5: From there, change the extension of the file from .m4a to .m4r. Then, drag the file to your desktop.

Step 6: Connect your phone to the computer and connect to iTunes. Select the three dots to your device and select Tones from the drop-down menu.

Step 7: Drag the file into the Tones menu, and then sync your device and there you have it! Your new ringtone should be included in the list of the default ones in the Ringtones menu.

While that process definitely will take you a few minutes to complete, it will be more than worth it if you are able to add a ringtone that you will love. You can repeat it with any song of audio file you want, which means you can turn almost anything into a ringtone! There is also an option to set certain ringtones for certain individuals, so we will show you how to do that too. This can be helpful if you want to know who is calling you or texting you without even taking out your phone to check.

How to Assign Certain Ringtones to Certain Individuals

Step 1: Open your contact list and select the individual you want to add a certain ringtone to.

Step 2: Hit the Edit button once you have selected the person, and scroll down to the Ringtone section.

Step 3: Once there, you can easily select the ringtone you want to be assigned to that individual.

Step 4: Once you pick the ringtone, hit the Done button on the top right portion of the screen and then you’re all set!

After reading through this article, you should easily be able to change and add ringtones to your iPhone 6S. As you saw, it is not that difficult to do and can be done within only a few minutes.
