Do Amazon Smart Plugs Have a MAC Address?

If you are looking this up, you are probably in a bit of a pickle. A MAC address issue with Amazon products is sadly a common thing. A MAC address should not be confused with Mac computers, it’s something entirely different.

Do Amazon Smart Plugs Have a MAC Address?

A Media Access Control address is a hardware address that is assigned to devices that can be connected to networks or with other devices. To answer the question in the title, yes each Amazon Smart Plug has a MAC address, but it is very difficult to find it.

Don’t worry, if you keep reading, you will find all the answers you need.

What Is a MAC Address

A Media Access Control address is not a Macintosh address. It is a hardware address assigned to devices by vendors or manufacturers. It is saved in the device’s memory, and it serves as an identifier.

It identifies every node of a network individually. MAC address, in simple terms, is a series of digits, in fact, six groups of two hexadecimal digits which are divided by hyphens or colons. Some vendors have different forms of MAC addresses, with three groups of digits divided by dots.

There’s no point getting further into details because that’s not the main topic of this article. Let’s talk about Amazon Smart Plugs and why their MAC address is important. This address can be easily looked up on computers and many other devices, but on an Amazon Smart Plug, it’s a completely different story.

This is largely Amazon’s fault, because they make it nearly impossible for some unknown reason.

Why Do You Need the MAC Address?

Knowing your Amazon Smart Plug MAC address is usually not that important. However, some users will need it to even use the device. People who have added extra layers of protection to their Wi-Fi network, for example.

Some universities, colleges, or even hotels have this security in place. They won’t let you connect the device to the network if you don’t provide its MAC address. This can be very frustrating, but there is no need to worry. You can solve it easily, well, for the most part.

The solution is easy if you get in touch with Amazon support, but their support operatives need to be experienced and tech-savvy. If they are not, they might not know how to help you properly. They might give you the usual answers – to look on the device, or on the box. The problem is, there is no MAC address there.

How to Find the Amazon Smart Plug’s MAC Address

As you could’ve guessed by now, the most reliable way of checking a MAC address is contacting the manufacturer or vendor. In this case, that would be Amazon. You should call their customer support, or contact them via their site.

They will be able to provide you with the correct MAC address or MAC ID as some call it, for your Amazon Smart Plug. If they offer you a replacement device, make sure to ask for its MAC address, because otherwise, you won’t solve the problem.

You’ll be left with another useless Amazon Smart Plug without knowing this address. If that happens, contact the support again with the same request. Of course, if you lose your patience, you can ask for a full refund and avoid using the device entirely.

It is up to you, but if you need the device, it is best to stay persistent.

The DIY Method

If you are a little tech-savvy, you can find the MAC address of your Smart Plug yourself. This can save you some time. Follow these steps:

  1. Enable a personal hotspot on any device you have available.
  2. Connect to the hotspot with a different device (this is important). You can use an Android phone, for example.
  3. Download the Smart Things app and use it to connect to the hotspot you’ve created on a different device. Add the Amazon Smart Plug to the list of devices.
  4. When you add the Smart Plug, go to Settings, and select the Smart Plug.

You should be able to see its MAC address in the info section. Save it, and now you can disable the hotspot. You can connect and use the Wi-Fi normally now.

Unfortunately, the DIY steps does not appear to work for Smart Plugs by Amazon that works only with Alexa. I think the DIY steps only works if the Smart Plug supports both Alexa and SmartThings.
