Apple has reportedly pulled a major software update for Apple TV, after some users reported that it bricked their devices and prevented them from downloading new content.

Apple TV update yanked after bricking devices

Apple TV 6.0 was released on Friday and was meant to bring iTunes Radio, music purchases and additional iCloud features to set-top boxes. But the update disappeared the next day after users reported error messages and bricked devices.

Apple TV 5.3 now remains the most up-to-date software version, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple has yet to issue any guidance to those who have been affected by the software update, leaving users in the dark.

“I clicked on ‘Restore Apple TV’ which told me it would download and install the new version update. I went for it, but then it got stucked [sic] at ‘Preparing Apple TV for restore…’ and after a couple of minutes I got this “Unknown error (1611)”, which didn’t explain anything, and I can’t use my ATV now,” said one forum user.

Some users have been able to restore their Apple TV by connecting it to their PCs and iTunes via a micro-USB cable.

Apple has yet to reply to request for comment.
