Since AI exploded onto the scene in a big way, people have come to rely on chatbots to provide info, generate code, squash bugs, and even generate the odd poems or writing prompts. In much the same way, the market for these AI assistants and chatbots has exploded too.
Today, we’ll be looking at three of the biggest: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, and how they compare with (and differ) from each other.
ChatGPT vs. Gemini vs. Claude – A Quick Breakdown
The best way to compare these three LLM giants is by looking at the key areas where they excel and differ. Here are some of the major ones:
Market Share

ChatGPT, as the oldest player in this young market, still leads the pack in terms of market share. That said, Claude is providing stiff competition. Although Gemini trails behind the other two in popularity, it’s by no means lagging and the tech giant behind it – Google – is known for innovation and may pull ahead in the long run.
Language Models
Contrary to popular belief, ChatGPT, like all chatbots, is not a Language Learning Model (LLM) in itself, but powered by one. In this case GPT-4o. Google’s Gemini (previously known as the less-successful Bard AI) is powered by a collection of models that exist under the Gemini name. Anthropic’s Claude runs off Claude Opus.

ChatGPT (in its free form) uses GPTs trained on billions of sets of data (although the paid version trains on a wider set of up-to-date data), while the other two rely on real-time access to data to generate responses.
Hallucinations
Ah, the bane of AI users everywhere. All three AI models are prone to hallucination, but ChatGPT has come the furthest in cutting down their frequency. Lagging behind the furthest is Claude. But that doesn’t mean Gemini isn’t off the hook either – its responses to searches that appear at the top of Google searches have included some hilarious and horrifying responses e.g. adding glue to pizza.

Price
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are free to the average user. Indeed, Gemini is almost inescapable to users of Google. For more advanced access, though, all three charge a monthly (or annual) fee. Claude is the cheapest at $20 for its Advanced tier, while ChatGPT and Gemini cost $20 for Pro and $25 for Team plans. The latter two also offer Enterprise options.
Model Strengths
Every AI model can do many AI jobs well, but there are some areas where one or two definitely come out on top:
- Response Time – Gemini is able to respond much quicker than its counterparts can to questions and provides compact answers.
- Logical Reasoning – Claude AI and ChatGPT excel at understanding not only logical questions but also the reasoning behind them.
- Common Sense Reasoning – All three models are well equipped to handle logical reasoning, but Gemini is best at also examining flaws in reasoning.
- Image Analysis – Claude provides the better image analysis of the three.
- Coding – ChatGPT is still the winner in developing backend code that works right the first time. As for aesthetics, Claude is the go-to for front-end development.
- Creative Writing – The LaMDA model of Gemini enables it to be more “human” and nuanced in its responses than ChatGPT. But for the most natural voice, Claude is your best bet. It’s also the best at writing poetry.
