The Complete Xbox Games with Gold List and Details

Games with Gold is Microsoft’s attempt to counter Sony’s PlayStation Plus program, which gives members free games each month. With the program, Xbox Live Gold members are eligible to receive multiple free games on the Xbox Store every month. Due to reader interest, we’ll catalog and archive the Games with Gold program here.

How to Get Free Games

Xbox Live Gold members must log-in to their consoles or the Xbox Marketplace and “purchase” each free game at some point during its promotional period. Games with Gold is available on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Generally, four games are released each month for approximately two weeks, two for each console. Two games are available during the first half of each month, and another two games during the second half. Note, however, that Microsoft occasionally changes this release schedule by, for example, releasing a single Xbox One game for an entire month, or by releasing more than two games per month for each platform.

You don’t need to actually download a game during its period of availability to get it, but you must at least complete the free “purchase” online or via your console in order to qualify. Once a game’s promotional period has expired, it will cease to be free and return to its former price, but if you’ve “purchased” the game for free prior to this, it will be yours indefinitely.

Games with Gold List To Date

Below is a table listing all Games with Gold titles to date. Each title links directly to the Xbox.com marketplace, where Xbox Live members can log in and “purchase” the games during their free period without having to log into their consoles.

“GWG Release” is the first day the game is free with the Games with Gold promotion, “Orig. Release” is the date the game was first released for Xbox, and “Reg. Price” is a game’s current price on the Xbox Store before the free promotion (not the game’s original retail price).

Yooka-Laylee

Available from 9/1/2021 – 9/15/2021, Zone of the Enders is a robot fighting based game that features battling enemies solo or in squads. If you remember this game from the days when the Xbox 360 was the primary Microsoft gaming console, then you’ll be happy to know it’s back with HD graphics. You can now enjoy all of your favorite robot fighting with even crisper resolution.

Staying Updated on the Current Xbox Gold Games

Each game has a separate timeframe of availability. It’s best to stay updated through Xbox to see which games are available. The games list updates every month and some are available for thirty days whereas others are only available every fifteen days.

Spider says:

Spider says:

Jim Tanous says:

Prosperity Kenneth says:
I’ll give star wars a go. Thanks!
thepcmate says:
I think that slas dash is the best
Joe Drewniak says:
Downloaded Dirt 3 with gwg aND then due to storage space I had to delete it. Now I have room again and it is no longer available on Xbox marketplace for 360
Alexandre Cossette says:
I also had storage problems so I could never download all the free games, so what you do is start the download then stop it/cancel it. Then you go into Account/Download History and you have everything you have ever downloaded, so you just select the game and re-download it.
Sapphire Opinion says:
You can also plug an external hard drive into the 360. Since last year, they lifted the 10 mb allocated space. Now you can use the entire drive for xbox games. I use a 1 TB drive and it works great.

I have a strange feeling vscode sent me here.
LilyKohaku says:
Will you ever post an up-to-date comprehensive list for PlayStation Plus members? I’m comparison shopping between the XO and PS4 and I can’t find enough definitive info to make a decision that I’m comfortable with.
tripinthehead says:
Just fyi, found out the hard way that even if you “purchased” certain xbox one games through the gwg program you can’t actually play them in the future without having a current gold subscription. At least that’s what Microsoft has told me. Bunch of bs if you ask me.
Nathan D Homan says:
If I get an xbox 360 game on my xbox one and then my Gold Subscription runs out a couple weeks later (and I don’t renew) will I lose access to the xbox 360 game?
TekRevue says:
Any Xbox 360 games obtained from Games with Gold remain active and are playable forever, even if you cancel your Gold Subscription.

However, Xbox One games obtained from Games with Gold will stop working once your subscription ends. The games will still be tied to your account and will become available again if you resubscribe in the future, but you can’t play them during any periods where you don’t have an active Gold subscription.

youngbikerb4 says:
I am tired of the kidy games on the xbox gold . I like one teen or one muture game once every month please because I have not downloaded many gold games .
Stewart Damien says:
Wow I can’t believe how many great 360 games I missed over time. Xbox One’s selection sucks in comparison. Sunset Overdrive been the best free game to date on Xbox One
D1 SKCHDB says:
I’ve got an XBOX joystick – USB
Cory says:
WWE 2K16 has never been apart of “Games With Gold” – Maybe for a small discount, but never part of the 2 free games a month.
TekRevue says:
Look at the date. WWE 2K16 will be free starting August 16th.
TVippy says:
Where to find a comprehensive list of free games for ALL REGIONS? There’re always more than 4 games per month available – you just need to know the region. Usually it’s Japan and Germany.
kaiZen weisZ says:
Whoa there. OK now THIS is important. Japan and Germany have different GWG releases? Hmmmmm. So twice a month we should change our regions to those and check? Thank you for a brilliant idea!
TVippy says:
It’s not a new idea, nor is it mine, but you’re welcome. What will also make you happy is that MS actually not opposed to this, officially.
PedroAlex says:
slash dash is also free in singapore this month
TVippy says:
For GOLD users only? Still free?
PedroAlex says:
not anymore
Darren Schwartz says:
Peggle GWG release date is wrong. Says 2015, should be 2016.
TekRevue says:
Thanks for catching that typo. We’ll fix it right away.
Joe swanson says:
Can someone please let me know of any free games that arent part of the games with gold or in the free section with world of tanks; for instance, I just discovered roblox and project spark. so if you know of anymore please pass it on ill be watching this page… i spent alot of time clicking through cheap looking games but you have to click each individually to see their price as far as i know
Mike Warner says:
So this month they are giing out dirt showdown. I bought hits game afew years back, used. Didn’t come with the online code so I never got to try it out. What’s the deal with it now? Do you get the code when you donwload it or do you still have to pay extra. I think it was like a season pass or sojething.
Mr. Hunt says:
I see it says they are only for Xbox 360. When are they going to do free games for the Xbox one? It puzzles me greatly this. Please find out when they are doing games for Xbox one then I can look forward to you updating your out of date rubbish.
TekRevue says:
Apologies. The chart listing the games is managed and updated separately from the body text on the page, which was originally published in late 2013. The body text has been updated to reflect the current release practice.
Mr. Hunt says:
Thanks 🙂
João Victor de Mello says:
Last Light is missing, from last week…
elizabeth says:
Thanks for the article, Jim. Just want to inform all folks who live outside US that Xbox 360 is a great media Player. If you want to access Netflix and other streaming stations on your Xbox360 / Xbox One, you can use UnoTelly as I do to get around the geo block.
Manjot Mohan says:
games with gold is terrible
John says:
Yeah maybe for Xbox one but they’ve been giving good games for 360 lol
Evan Thornton says:
Really, the Xbox One hasn’t had the library necessary to give out full version games like the 360 has. They’ve now given out Metal Gear Solid V, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, and you’ll get Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition the second half of this month. Just give it a bit and you’ll start seeing better games. So far, I’ve owned all the games with gold.
John Vandenberg says:
Yea I’ve owned all of the games offered so far. I would like to see something where those who buy games on release be offered something that would benefit them as well.
Patriot says:
1st of all Assassains creed was 1st. People tell me that they got fable 3 with the free with gold. Others agree with me, they didn’t see Fable 3 either.
TekRevue says:
Fable III was indeed free, and it was the first game Microsoft gave away free to Xbox Live members. It could be argued that Fable III isn’t technically part of “Games with Gold” because the regular free game updates didn’t begin until July, but it was offered as a free download on Xbox 360 to all Xbox Live members from June 10th to June 30th, 2013.
Patriot says:
I know what I am talking about, I didn’t see it for free 1st, Asassains Creed 2 was the first. I have been part of it for day 1. Why didn’t I see it then?
Chad Lehew says:
Fable 3 was first free download
TekRevue says:
I have no idea why you didn’t see it. It was the first. My Xbox 360 has a copy of the game on it right now thanks to the free promo.
Evan Thornton says:
My guess would be that you didn’t look…
im a fan says:
no it was fable 3
