How To Delete a Channel in Telegram
For many people, Telegram has become the go-to app for keeping in touch with friends and family and acquaintances in the virtual world. Unlike traditional messaging solutions, the platform lets users create channels where they connect with people with common interests. Users running several channels can get overwhelmed by the effort required to keep a channel running. Also, you might find that your interests have shifted, and the channel doesn’t serve you anymore. Fortunately, Telegram allows users to delete channels, regardless of whether they’re using the app on their mobile device or PC.
Keep reading to learn how to delete a channel in Telegram on a PC, Macbook, Android tablet, or iOS device.
Deleting a Telegram channel on your PC is a relatively quick method. To do so:
- Launch the Telegram desktop app.
- Navigate to the channel you wish to delete and click on it to view the Channel Info page.
- Press the three vertical dots next to the channel name to open the drop-down menu.
- Choose the “Manage Channel” option.
- Scroll to the bottom of the window and tap “Delete Channel.”
- Select the “Delete” button to confirm the action.
When you confirm your decision, Telegram will display a pop-up window, informing you that you have six seconds to reverse the action. If you’ve accidentally selected the wrong channel, quickly press the “Undo” button to retrieve the deleted channel. After the six seconds have elapsed, you’ll have no way of retrieving the channel. While this time frame does allow you to correct possible mistakes, it may not be enough, especially if you’re managing several channels with similar names. Before hitting “Delete,” go over the Channel Info page carefully to ensure you’re terminating the right channel.
Note that Telegram can destroy a channel when your account is inactive. If you haven’t used your account for 90 days, Telegram will terminate all its associated channels. Before deactivating them, the platform will notify subscribers of the decision.
How to Delete a Channel in Telegram on a Mac
Since Telegram is supported by multiple devices, you can delete a channel using your Mac. To do so:
- Open the Telegram desktop app.
- Find the channel you want to delete and tap it to enter the Channel Info page.
- Select the three vertical dots beside the channel name to view the drop-down menu.
- Click on the “Manage Channel” option.
- Navigate to the bottom of the window and press “Delete Channel.”
- Tap the “Delete” button to finish the action.
When you press “Delete,” Telegram gives you a six-second time frame to undo the action. If you realize you’ve accidentally terminated the wrong channel, click on the “Undo” button, and the channel will remain active. Once the six-second countdown is completed, it’s impossible to reactivate a deleted channel. Although the “Undo” button is available for a few seconds, some users may not immediately realize they have made a mistake, and the channel will be lost forever. Since channels are based on personal interests, a user’s channels can have similar names. Ensure you’re deleting the appropriate channel by inspecting its name and carefully reading the Channel Information page.
Another way of deleting a channel is by not using your account for 90 days. After three months of inactivity, Telegram will terminate all channels tied to your account. Before wiping the channels, the platform will alert all channel subscribers of the decision to prevent any confusion.
Growing a channel on Telegram requires a lot of work. You have to post regular updates to boost engagement and attract new subscribers. When there are new developments regarding the channel topic, you also have to send out messages and keep subscribers up-to-date.
However, if you lose interest in the topic or want to focus your efforts on other activities, you can delete the channel through your iPhone’s Telegram app. To do so:
- Go to the Telegram channel you wish to delete.
- Tap on the channel display picture at the top part of the screen.
- Tap “Edit” in the upper-right corner to open the options menu.
- Scan the menu and choose the “Delete Channel” option.
- Tap the “Delete Channel” button again to confirm the action.
Once you delete your Telegram channel, its subscribers will lose access to its messaging history and posts.
If you haven’t been using Telegram as much lately, the platform can automatically delete all channels started by your account. When an account is inactive for 90 days, Telegram terminates all channels connected to it. Before doing so, the platform will post channel updates, notifying subscribers of their decision.
If your interests have changed and you’ve outgrown your Telegram channel, you can delete it using the app on your iPad. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the Telegram channel you wish to terminate.
- Press the channel display image next to the channel’s name.
- Select “Edit” to open the drop-down menu.
- Go through the options and choose “Delete Channel.”
- Hit the “Delete Channel” button again to confirm your decision.
You can delete a channel manually, but Telegram can also wipe it if your account has been inactive. After 90 days of inactivity, the platform wipes all channels linked to your account. Before a channel is deleted, Telegram posts an update message, alerting subscribers that the channel will soon be gone.
With the classic Telegram app, you can chat with other users and call them through the same tab. However, the Telegram X app is more user-friendly. It lets you chat with friends and call users through different tabs, streamlining online communications.
Channel owners often lean towards Telegram X because it displays images in high resolution, preserving their quality when they’re shared with subscribers. Regardless of the app you’ve installed on your Android device, deleting a channel is relatively straightforward.
To delete a channel using the Telegram app:
- Open the Telegram channel you want to terminate.
- Click on the channel’s display image in the upper part of the interface.
- Tap the “Pencil” icon.
- Press the “Channel Info” tab and select the “Delete Channel” option at the bottom of the screen.
- Choose “Delete for all subscribers” and click on the “Delete channel” button to complete the action.
The channel will be wiped from the platform, and its subscribers won’t be able to access its messaging history and posts.
The second way of deleting a channel involves using the Telegram X app for Android. To do so:
- Select the channel you want to delete to open it in a separate tab.
- Click on the top bar and select the pencil-shaped “Edit” icon.
- Press the three vertical dots to open the drop-down menu.
- Choose the “Destroy channel” option.
If you haven’t accessed your Telegram account for a while, you should be aware that Telegram is also able to destroy channels run by inactive accounts. When you don’t use your account for 90 days, Telegram identifies all the channels you’ve started and deletes them. Before destroying a channel, Telegram sends a notification to its subscribers, informing them of the decision.
Is leaving a channel the same as deleting it?
Once you leave a channel you created, you can select a member to act as the channel administrator. The user takes on the responsibility of managing the channel, and its content remains available to its subscribers. However, when you terminate a channel, all of its data is permanently erased, and subscribers won’t be able to view it anymore. Additionally, you can rejoin a channel you’ve left, while it’s impossible to retrieve a deleted channel.
