Does Discord Notify the Other Person When you Screenshot?

Does Discord notify someone when you screenshot? Do I need screenshots to report someone on Discord? How do I handle toxicity or fighting on my channel? If you’re trying to manage a channel in Discord and are struggling to learn how to handle the many personalities that you’ll see, you’re in the right place!

Does Discord Notify the Other Person When you Screenshot?

The vast majority of interactions on Discord are positive ones. There is lots of banter and good natured messing around as well as more mature or sensible chats. Yet there always seems to be that one person who wants to spoil it for others. It is that single person that can make running a Discord channel hard work and being in the channel a less enjoyable experience for your other members.

Managing troublemakers in Discord

Handling these characters depends on what they have done and how the others are taking it. It also depends on the personalities involved. Your other members may handle it for you and put the troublemaker in their place or shut them down so bad they leave or shut up.

If they don’t handle it, then it’s up to you.

Private message them

The easiest way to handle things is with a private message. Select their username from the sidebar and a small window will appear with a link to their profile, their role and a small chat window. Type something into this window to direct message them. Nobody else will see the message so you can be frank with them.

Keep it sensible and mature and let them know why their behavior is not acceptable and what will happen if they don’t stop. Be calm and be cool. They may take the warning and behave or they may not.

If they don’t take any notice, you have three main options. You can kick them, ban them or report them.

Does Discord notify someone when you screenshot?

Screenshots are useful for evidence if you need to report someone but you don’t need to take one. You may want evidence for your own peace of mind and that’s fine. But will Discord tell the other people that you took a screenshot? No, Discord has no notification function like that.

The easiest way to screenshot is to use PrtScn in Windows or Shift + Command + 4 and select the area on a Mac. Neither method will notify Discord what you have done. This can be useful for gathering evidence to support your action should it be necessary.

Kicking someone in Discord

Kicking will remove them from your channel until they are invited to return. It should not be your first move when tackling idiocy but you should also not be afraid to use it. After a fair warning and a private message or two, you should kick someone from the channel. It shows that person you won’t tolerate toxicity and show other members you mean business.

  1. Select their name from your channel screen.
  2. Right click and select Kick (Username).
  3. Select Kick again to confirm.

The individual will only be able to rejoin your channel if someone with the right privileges gives permission. They will not just be able to rejoin.

This should be enough for most users but there may be one or two who just don’t get the message. That’s where a ban comes in useful.

Ban someone in Discord

Banning someone is very similar to kicking but requires either an Admin or Channel Owner to allow the individual back in. If the person kicked has a friend who invites them back, a ban can stop that in its tracks. The process is exactly the same as kicking.

  1. Select their name from your channel screen.
  2. Right click and select Ban (Username).
  3. Select Ban again to confirm.

Reporting someone in Discord

I mentioned earlier that taking a screenshot of a chat is not necessary when reporting someone in Discord. The reason is that the team will have access to chat logs and you have to link to one of those logs as part of the reporting process. You will need to be in developer mode for this to work.

Here’s how to report someone on Discord:

  1. Right click the user and select Copy ID for the User ID.
  2. Paste it somewhere.
  3. Select the three dots to the right of the message you’re reporting and select Copy Link.
  4. Paste it somewhere.
  5. Right click the server name in the channel list and select Copy ID.
  6. Paste it somewhere.
  7. Visit this link and create a report using the above copied data.

Now it’s up to the Discord Trust & Safety team to investigate and take action if they deem it necessary.
