How To Edit a SRT File

Flawed subtitles are annoying and all too common. You can’t relax and enjoy your movie or show if the text isn’t correct or the subtitles aren’t on time.

If you run across an unsatisfactory subtitle, your new move is probably either to download a new subtitle file or to try to make it work through your video player (GOM Player, VLC Media, Windows Media Player, etc.).

When the subtitle needs to be sped up or slowed down, you can just use your video player. But what if the text itself needs changing? Or if the subtitle’s timing is too erratic to be fixed with a video player?

This article will show you how you can easily edit and fix your subtitles by opening their SRT files. First, let’s go through the basics.

What Are SRT Files?

SRT (SubRip Text) is a file type used for subtitles.

Subtitles are basically written as normal text files. If you save them with the extension SRT instead of TXT, you will make them readable by video player programs.

  1. Start by creating a new file with you text editor of choice, you can leave the file blank or write something in it. Notepad
  2. Now, save the file with a .srt extension, the file is named yoursubtitle.srt in this example. .srt file creation
  3. Once you save the text you’ve written as an SRT file, you will probably notice that its icon has changed into your default video player’s icon (this doesn’t always happen, as it depends on the video player you use).

How Can You Edit an SRT File?

If there are mistakes – such as typos, lags, or translation errors – that you would like to change in your subtitle, you can try various tools. All that you need to do is open the SRT file, make the change, and save it.

Here are some tools that allow you to do that.

Notepad

Using Notepad is probably the easiest way to correct a subtitle by editing the SRT file. You don’t have to download and install Notepad, as it comes pre-installed on every PC. On a Mac, you can use TextEdit instead.

So, the first step is to open the SRT file that you want to edit. When you try to double-click on the SRT file, you will notice that your system doesn’t know how to open it because of the file’s SRT extension. Since none of the default programs recognize this type of file, you need to select a program manually.

  1. Right-click on the SRT file, and then select the Open With option. You should be able to see Notepad under its list of programs, but if that’s not the case, click on Select Default Program and find Notepad.
  2. Now that you have opened the file that you want to change, you have access to its content. From there, you will be able to see that the SRT file consists of time-stamps and the text itself. All that you need to do now is make the change that you want and save the file.
