How to Get Characters in Genshin Impact

Just like any other Gacha-based title, Genshin Impact offers a variety of playable characters. Naturally, you don’t get access to all of them from the beginning. The playable characters are unlocked as you play the game.

There is more than one way to unlock new characters here, though. In this article, we’ll dig deeper into how you can obtain all of your favorite characters in Genshin Impact.

How to Get Characters in Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact boasts north of 20 playable characters across two playable regions. At the moment, there are only two ways of unlocking them. Using the Gacha System or “naturally.”

The Gacha System

Like many other similar games, Genshin Impact uses the Gacha System, which involves exchanging Wishes for rewards. They are pretty much your regular random loot boxes.

You can make a Wish or a 10-Wish stack to get a reward. The 10-Wish option guarantees a playable character or a 4-star weapon. Still, there is no guarantee when it comes to 5-star rewards.

But how do Wishes work? Well, the main currency in Genshin Impact is Primogems. 160 Primogems buy you a single Wish. You get Primogems by completing quests, challenges, events, etc. You can also get a Wish for 75 Stardust or 5 Starglitter. Most of the time, you’ll be on the lookout for Primogems, though.

Natural Game Progress

Not every Genshin Impact playable character can be unlocked by simply progressing in the game. With that said, the characters such as Lisa, Kaeya, and Amber, for instance, are unlocked through Archon quest completion. Before you set out to use the Gacha System to get new characters, see whether you can get the one you want through natural game progress.

How to Get Characters in Genshin Impact Fast

Although Genshin Impact is a F2P (Free-to-Play) game, you can always pay to speed things up. As mentioned, you can get characters (and weapons) via the Gacha System. To use this system, you’re going to need Primogems.

Now, as the main in-game currency, Primogens can be bought using real-life money. For $4.99, for example, you can purchase the Blessing of the Welkin Moon card, which gives you 90 Primogems and 300 Genesis Crystals (convertible into Primogems). Not only that, but you get 90 Primogems each day over the course of the following 30 days. With each Wish costing 160 Primogems, you can look forward to a lot of Wishes for less than $5.

This is definitely the quickest way to get the in-game currency, meaning that it’s the fastest way to obtain Wishes. Using the Gacha System, you can use your Wishes to get the best characters in Genshin Impact. Bear in mind, though, that this is still a gamble.

The first time you make a Wish, the chances of getting a character that you want are 0.6%. As you get more Wishes, these odds drop. The lowest point is 0.187%. At the Wish number 76, though, the odds spike up to 20.637%. The higher odds last until Wish number 80, at which point the Gacha System resets.

How to Get Characters in Genshin Impact for Free

At the end of the day, Genshin Impact remains a F2P game. Yes, this means that you don’t have to pay anything to get Wishes. The free method, however, is significantly slower than the paid method.

The first thing to pay attention to here is your email inbox. Genshin Impact is a game that’s still in its infancy, which means that the developers are going to offer a variety of free content, which includes Primogems.

There is in-game money to be earned from quests, as well. Each quest will show you the rewards before you accept the task. You can obtain Primogems from daily commissions, found in the Adventurer’s Guild, as well.

Complete the entire chapter of tasks in your Adventurer’s Handbook (navigate to the Experience tab), and you get 50 Primogems. You won’t get paid for completing individual tasks, though.

You can also complete various achievements in exchange for the in-game currency. To access the list of achievements, go to the game’s main menu, and select the Achievements tab. You’ll find 14 different categories here.

Finally, find Domains, chests, Teleport Waypoints, and Statues of the Seven to earn rewards.

How to Get Characters in Genshin Impact Back from Expedition

Once you’ve unlocked the Adventure Rank 14, you’ll be able to send your characters on expeditions. These can last 4, 8, 12, or 20 hours. The longer your characters are on the expeditions, the bigger reward you get.

If you want to recall a character from one of these expeditions, you can go to the Party Setup Menu. Alternatively, you can do this from the Adventurer’s Guild. Bear in mind, however, that a recalled character will return without any rewards. Don’t recall the characters that are close to finishing an expedition.

How to Get Characters in Genshin Impact on Different Platforms

As of now, Genshin Impact is available on iOS, Android, Windows, and PlayStation 4. The game uses a cross-saves feature that essentially allows you to play the game on a mobile, tablet, or Windows platform, as you see fit. In other words, you can go back-and-forth between platforms. If you start the game on your PlayStation 4, however, you won’t be able to play it anywhere else except on that device.

It’s important to note that Genshin Impact is a cross-platform game, meaning that the methods for obtaining characters are identical across all available platforms.
