How to Create a Club in Clubhouse

Clubhouse is a chat app that has only been around for a year, but it’s already causing a stir among those looking forward to a new social media platform. The very name of the app suggests exclusivity because clubhouses are usually invite-only.

How to Create a Club in Clubhouse

The same goes for creating your own club in the Clubhouse app.

In this article, we’ll cover the steps involved and also elaborate on how the app itself works, how you can host rooms and add topics, as well as outline how the invitation process works.

What Is the Clubhouse App, and How Does It Work?

Before we get into details of how to navigate the Clubhouse app and create clubs, let’s review what the app represents and how it works. All of which will provide a better understanding of how the clubs and rooms function within the app.

Clubhouse is an audio-based chat app where users listen to other people’s conversations. You can raise your hand, and the host of the room where the conversation is taking place can include you as well. For the most part, people are there to hear conversations they wouldn’t otherwise be included in.

You shouldn’t confuse this concept with eavesdropping, because everyone speaking on Clubhouse wants to be heard. One of the reasons users flock to the Clubhouse is because many renowned people and even celebrities use it frequently.

Unlike Twitter, where you can only read what your favorite celebrity said, on Clubhouse, you can listen to them have a long-form conversation with listeners. It’s a lot like a podcast or a Zoom call, only with hundreds or thousands of different people.

Clubhouse Is (For Now) Invite-Only

According to the Clubhouse official blog, the app wasn’t designed to be exclusive. In fact, the company aims to make it available for everyone. However, given that they’ve chosen the approach that users can only be invited to join the app, that sounds contradictory.

But this is the business model they’ve selected. The app will eventually be available to everyone if the slower roll-out is proven to be successful. Officially, Clubhouse is still in its beta version, and it’s unclear when the general release is going to be.

Clubhouse representatives say that they want to create more detailed community guidelines, provide more efficient in-app safety features, and encourage inclusion before preparing for that step.

How Does Anyone Join Clubhouse?

If we leave the discussion about the exclusivity of Clubhouse aside, how does anyone get in exactly? Basically, an existing member of Clubhouse must invite you first.

That member was able to join the app upon invitation-only as well. Every new user gets the right to invite two other users.

As they use the app regularly, that number will increase, and so will the membership. There is another option, too, one that doesn’t require an invitation but is probably a more challenging route.

You can post about Clubhouse on other social media platforms or follow Clubhouse hashtags. You might get an invite from existing Clubhouse users that way if you manage to catch their attention with your posts.

How to Create a Club in Clubhouse on iPhone

iPhone users can download the Clubhouse app from the App Store. And if you were fortunate enough to get an invitation to join Clubhouse, your goal will likely become to have your own club within the app.

A club is a space that allows users to host more intimate conversations with the community of their choice. If you have your club on Clubhouse, you’re required to host recurring meetups with your followers to hold onto your club.

But creating a club is easier said than done – in Clubhouse, it’s a slow process with no guarantees. The app considers clubs to be an experimental feature for now, and they only allow clubs that they approve manually.

Also, one user can have only one club of their own even if they are granted permission to create it. However, every user can submit a request for a club and wait for a response from the app. Here’s how that works:

  1. Launch the Clubhouse app on your iPhone and go to the main feed.
  2. Tap on your profile photo in the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap on the gear icon in the top right corner. It accesses app settings.
  4. Scroll down to the “FAQ/Contact Us” option and tap. It will redirect you to a “Clubhouse Knowledge Center” website.
  5. Under “Frequently Asked Questions,” select the “How can I start a club?” option.
  6. At the bottom of the page, click on the “You can find the club request form here” option.
  7. Then follow all the prompts to fill out an application.

You will be asked to give your club a name and set the category the club will belong to. You’ll also have to give a short description (<200 characters) of the club. Finally, you’ll provide your username and the day and time of your potential regular meetups.

How to Create a Club in Clubhouse on Android Device

Unfortunately, Android users don’t have the chance to download and use the Clubhouse app. Not yet anyway. For now, Clubhouse is only available for iPhones. If you have an iPad, you can download the app, but you’ll soon realize that the interface is optimized for iPhones only.

There are more Android users in the world than iPhone users, so there’s a whole market waiting for the Clubhouse app. They’ve made their roll-out tempo clear and their intentions to eventually reach everyone.

We don’t know when the Clubhouse app will be available on Play Store, but it’s safe to say that at some point, it will arrive. Also, there is no web version of the app either.

I’ve Created a Club, What’s Next?

If you were active enough on the Clubhouse app and hosted regular meetups and followed all the guidelines, and have your own club, how do you make the most of it?

Your club must belong to one of many categories such as sports, entertainment, languages, tech, places, etc. Your task is to host interesting meetups on a specific topic, in the hope of encouraging other users to join the conversation.

If you want to know where to find your club in the app, just go to your Clubhouse profile, and you’ll see the “Members of” option. The name and the “badge” of your club will be there. Once you tap on the badge, you’ll be redirected to your club.

Keep in mind that you can add a logo or a photo for your club too. If you want to change the name or the description of your club at some point, you’ll need to contact Clubhouse directly. The club’s name has a 25-character limit, and the description is 150 characters.

How to Ban Users From Your Club?

You can ban users from your club in Clubhouse by blocking them. All you need to do is visit that person’s profile page and select three vertical dots in the upper right corner of the screen. A pop-up menu will appear, and you need to select “Block.”

This will prevent the user from entering your club or any room where you are the speaker. Clubhouse will also warn you about the rooms where they are speaking. You can also select the “Report an incident” option if you want to report a user to Clubhouse due to them breaking community guidelines.

How to Invite Users to Your Club?

Once you become the club admin, you can ask others to join in the conversation. You can search your contacts and invite anyone from Clubhouse that’s on the list. Another option is to see who follows you and invite one of your followers.

Finally, you can create a secret invite link and share it with people whose phone numbers you don’t have. The number of invites you will have for your club will depend on the club’s success and activity.

Your only task is to host as many meetups as possible, and as the number of invites you’re allowed to grows, you’ll receive in-app notifications regarding the matter. Furthermore, if you’re an admin, you can assign a co-admin to take over when necessary.

Reaching for the Clubhouse Admin Title

For now, the road to creating your own club in Clubhouse seems overly complicated. But that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. Sure, celebrities and other famous people might get all the perks immediately.

But as long as you keep a steady social media presence and behave according to the app’s community guidelines, someone will eventually send you an invite.

The most important thing to remember is that Clubhouse doesn’t have an automated approval feature yet, and you never really know who will get to have their club and who will not.
