How to Hide Chat in WeChat

Are you the type that prefers to keep their conversations away from the prying eyes? Do you fear that your friend will rush to WeChat to spy on your conversations if you give them the phone for just a few seconds?

If so, we have some bad news, as there’s no reliable way to hide a conversation in WeChat. However, what you can do is delete a chat, and then restore it later or perform a backup on an iOS or Android device. Read on to see how to keep your chats safe even after deleting them.

Deleting a Chat

WeChat makes deleting a chat very easy as there are multiple ways to do it. The easiest way to delete a whole conversation is the following:

1. Swipe the conversation to the left.
2. You will see two options: “Mark as Unread” and “Delete.” Tap on the latter and opt to delete both the messages and the conversation.

If you want to keep the conversation, but still delete all messages:

1. Open the conversation that has the messages you want to delete.
2. Tap on the person’s profile icon to open the “Details” screen.
3. Select “Clear Chat History.”

Finally, if you want to delete just a single message in a conversation:

1. Open a conversation.
2. Tap on the message you want to delete and hold until a small menu pops up above the message.
3. Choose “Delete.”
   

Backing up WeChat Chat History on iOS

Even after you delete your WeChat messages, they are not permanently lost. However, they might be somewhat hard to retrieve. To make things worse, you might lose your other data while trying to restore them. Backing up the messages before deleting them makes the process a bit easier, so if you haven’t deleted the messages already, consider backing them up first.

Use the WeChat Computer App to Backup Chats

1. Run the WeChat application on your computer and log in.
2. A QR code will appear. Use your iPhone’s WeChat app to scan it. Once you do this, you’ll also be able to chat from your computer.
3. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
4. Go back to the WeChat app on your computer and click on “More.”
5. Open the “Backup and Restore” tab.
6. In the PC application, select “Back up on PC.”

Use the WeChat Computer App to Restore Chats

If you’ve used the WeChat computer application to back up your chats, you can also use it to restore your WeChat messages.

1. Connect your iPhone and your computer to the same wireless network and open the WeChat application.
2. Tap the icon in the bottom-left corner.
3. Select “Backup and Restore.”
4. Click on the “Restore on iPhone” button to start restoring the backup.

Use the Chat Log Migration Function

WeChat has a “Chat Log Migration” option that lets you transfer all your chats from your iPhone to another device.

1. First off, connect the two devices to the same Wi-Fi network. Sign into your WeChat account on both the iPhone and the other device.
2. Go to the WeChat’s “Me” tab on your iPhone.
3. Tap on the “Settings” button.
4. Open the “General” tab.
5. Select “Chat Log Migration.”
6. Choose “Select Chat Transcript.”
7. WeChat will then show you a QR code. Scan it with the other device. The migration will begin automatically once the app finishes scanning the code.

Restoring the Backup from iTunes

If you didn’t backup your messages before deleting them, you can restore them using iTunes. This will only be possible if you’ve synced your iPhone to iTunes recently. Here’s how to do it..

1. Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone to it via USB.
2. Wait for iTunes to recognize the iPhone and then select it.
3. Click on “Restore Backup.”
4. Choose the date you’d like to revert your phone to.
5. Finally, select “Restore.” Keep your phone connected to your computer until this is done.

Backing up WeChat Chat History on Android

In the case of Android, you need to rely on the WeChat’s computer application to both backup and restore the chat history.

1. Run WeChat on your computer and log in.
2. Click on “More.”
3. Go to “Backup and Restore.”
4. Select “Back up on PC.”
5. Take your Android phone and tap on the “Backup All” button if you want to save all chats. Otherwise, tap on the “Select Chat History” button, select the conversations that you need, and tap on “Done.”

Note: Once the backup is finished, you’ll receive a message on both your computer and your smartphone.

Restoring the Backup on Android

1. Start the WeChat computer application and log in.
2. Click on “More.”
3. Open the “Backup and Restore” menu.
4. Choose “Restore on phone.“
5. See which conversations you would like to restore, or restore them all by clicking on the “Select All” button.
6. Click on the “OK” button.
7. Take your Android smartphone and tap on the “Restore button.”
8. When the process is finished, tap the “Done” button.
