iPhone XS – Sound Not Working – What to Do?

iPhone XS is capable of reproducing surprisingly high-quality sound for a relatively small smartphone. But what happens if suddenly it doesn’t make any sound at all? In most cases, you just need to tweak some settings or restart the iPhone to have the sound back.

iPhone XS - Sound Not Working - What to Do?

This write-up covers some of the most common sound problems. And there are simple guides to help you troubleshoot the issue.

On the other hand, don’t hesitate to share your own experience with sound not working or anything else in the comments section below.

Check Silent Modes

First of all, you might’ve accidentally put your iPhone XS into one of the silent modes. For example, if your phone is on Do Not Disturb, it won’t produce any sound at all. The same goes for mute. Here’s how to check for it:

1. Go to Control Center

Swipe down from the right side of the notch to access Control Center.

2. Check the “Crescent Moon” Icon

The “crescent moon” icon symbolizes the Do Not Disturb mode. If the icon is white with a purple moon, it means the mode is on.

3. Turn off the Do Not Disturb Mode

Tap on the icon to disable the mode and check whether sound has come back on your phone.

Inspect the Mute Button

This is a simple but often overlooked cause for the lack of sound. Take a look at the left side of your iPhone XS and make sure the Mute button is in the proper position.

In addition, you can check the sound level and other settings by doing the following:

1. Open the Settings App

Tap on the Settings app to enter and select Sounds from the menu.

2. Check the Volume Slider

Inspect the Volume slider and slide it all the way to the right if it has been silenced.

Disable Bluetooth

iPhone XS might have stayed paired with your Apple EarPods or other wireless headphones. If that’s the case, all the sound goes to the headphones rather than the phone’s stereo speakers. The same issue might apply to other Bluetooth-enabled sound devices, so you turn Bluetooth off and see.

1. Access Settings

Swipe the Settings menu until you reach Bluetooth, then tap to enter.

2. Toggle off the Button

Tap the button next to the Bluetooth option to disable it and check whether you have the sound back.

Restart Your iPhone XS

Restarting the phone to clear its cache is another quick method to fix the sound.

1. Press the Volume Buttons

First, press the Volume Up and then the Volume Down button and release.

2. Press and Hold the Power Button

Keep holding the Power button until you see the Apple logo on the screen, then release and wait for the phone to boot up.

Note: You need to follow the pressing sequence as described above or force restart won’t initiate.

To Wrap Up

If none of the fixes above work, you may want to try updating your iPhone or performing a hard reset. Make sure to back up the phone before a hard reset to avoid losing your data. As a last resort, you can call customer service or take your phone to a nearby Apple store to have it checked out.
