How to Join Twitter Spaces

Though the official public launch of Twitter spaces is due in April 2021, in the meantime, we’ll cover the steps for some of its current functionality including, how to join a Twitter space from your Android or iOS device.

How to Join a Twitter Space on the Android App?

To join a Twitter space using your Android device:

  1. Launch the app on your Android device.
    • If you don’t see any spaces to join, try updating Twitter.
  2. The spaces available for you to join will appear in the Fleets section at the top of the screen. Tap on a space to see the host and participants.
    • If you’ve received a DM with the link to join a space, just tap on the link.
  3. To join the space, click on “Start listening,” found at the bottom of the member’s list. You’ll automatically join the space as a Listener.
    • To ask for approval to join the conversation, tap on the “Request” button found at the bottom. When approved, when you’re ready to speak, unmute your microphone by tapping on it once.
    • If you’re permitted to speak, your Twitter profile photo will display with “Speaker” underneath it.
    • Tap on the microphone icon found at the bottom left of the screen to switch your audio on or off.
    • To show agree/disagreement reactions to what’s being said, tap on the heart icon with the plus sign found at the bottom-right of the space.
    • To leave the space and return to your Twitter timeline, tap on “Leave” found at the top right-hand corner.

How to Join a Twitter Space on a PC?

Twitter Spaces is currently available on Android and iOS only. The desktop web browser version is planned to be rolled out sometime in April 2021. At the time of writing, Twitter has not shared any specific dates on when it’ll be ready.

How to Join a Twitter Space on the iPhone App?

To join a Twitter space using you’re an iOS device:

  1. Launch the app on your iOS device.
  2. The spaces available for you to join will appear in the Fleets section at the top of the screen. Tap on a space to see the host and participants.
    • If you’ve received a DM with the link to join a space, just tap on the link.
  3. To join the space, click on “Join this space” found at the bottom of the member’s list. You’ll automatically join the space as a Listener.
    • If you’re permitted to speak, at the top of the space your Twitter profile photo will display with “Speaker” underneath it.
    • Tap on the microphone icon found at the bottom left of the screen to switch your audio on or off.

How to Join a Twitter Space on a Mac?

How Do You Create Spaces on Twitter?

Note: Currently only a limited number of iOS users can create Twitter spaces until the app’s official release in April 2021. If your tweets are protected, you won’t be able to create a space.

1. From your iPhone or iPad, launch Twitter.

2. To expand your icons, long-press the new tweet button; a feather with a plus sign found at the bottom right-hand corner.

· A new space can also be started by tapping on your Fleet at the top left-hand corner, scrolling to the right then selecting “Spaces.”

3. Tap on the new spaces icon, (the diamond made of circles) to create a new space.

· Because all spaces are public, anyone can join your space as a listener even if they don’t follow you.

· When choosing who can speak in your space, it can be Everyone who joins, only the people you follow or only people you invite to speak. People who you don’t permit to speak initially will need to request permission for you to approve or decline.

· There is no limit to the number of listeners in a space; up to 11 (including the host) can speak at once.

4. To make your space and microphone active, tap on “Start your Space.”

· To allow someone to speak, tap on their photo, then switch their “Allow mic access” to “On.”

· To view speaking requests, at the bottom right, tap on the “Requests” button.

· To share your space, open the sharing menu, tap on the sharing icon found at the bottom of the screen. This will allow you to share the link to your space via a tweet or DM.

How to Mute and Unmute Yourself in Twitter Spaces?

1. The microphone is found at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, tap on it once to unmute yourself.

· The microphone will turn purple and display “Mic is on” underneath it. When you start to speak, an equalizer icon will appear in purple underneath your profile picture and move as you speak.

2. To mute yourself again, click on the microphone once. It will now appear white with a diagonal line through it with “Mic is off” underneath.

How Do I Permanently Delete My Twitter Account?

1. From a desktop top web browser, navigate to Twitter and sign in to your account. The app does not include a deactivation link; therefore, you’ll need to access it from the Twitter website.

2. Click on your profile, then under more from the menu on the left-hand side select, “Settings” > “Privacy.”

3. Click on the “Deactivate my account” link found at the bottom of the page.

4. On the confirmation page, click on the blue “Deactivate” button found at the bottom of the confirmation message.

5. You’ll be redirected to another page to double-check that you want to deactivate your account. To confirm, enter your Twitter password and hit the ‘’Deactivate’’ button.

6. It would now be a good idea to uninstall the app from your mobile devices. If you accidentally click on the app within the first 30 days of deactivation, it will reverse the process and you’ll need to do it again.

· So, do not log in again for the next 30 days or into any apps or services integrated with your Twitter account.

Twitter Spaces vs. Clubhouse

Twitter spaces and Clubhouse are the latest real-time audio chat rooms; let’s look at some of the unique attributes for both:

Twitter spaces access:

· Spaces is an added feature of Twitter, currently available on Android and iOS with planned desktop web access.

· Twitter spaces are public and anyone can join.

Clubhouse access:

· Clubhouse is a standalone app for iOS users by invitation only.

Twitter spaces contacts:

· You have the choice of linking your contacts to Twitter. Since spaces is a Twitter add-on, it has the advantage of direct access to your social graph. Whenever someone you follow begins a space you can take part as a listener and or a speaker.

Clubhouse contacts:

· During the sign-up process, you’ll be asked for access to your personal contacts list before you can invite others to join.

Twitter spaces features:

· Spaces have specific emoji reactions, including waving and the peace sign.

· It provides live audio subtitles, so you can keep up with the conversations without sound.

· Shared tweets can be added to a Twitter space and used as a discussion point.

· You can follow people without needing to leave the app.

Clubhouse features:

· Clubhouse has a workaround when reacting to comments, by rapidly muting/unmuting the microphone as applause.

· Clubhouse is quite strict on using real names since the app doesn’t allow you to change your name easily, which can be reassuring.

· Following people, since a clubhouse profile currently links to your Twitter or Instagram profile; you’ll need to leave the app to set that up.

Twitter spaces account removal:

· You can delete your Twitter account directly from the desktop web browser version of Twitter.

Clubhouse account removal:

· You’ll need to send an email to request the removal of your account, then wait for it to be processed.

Twitter’s Audio-Only Chat Rooms
