Sound is vital when you want a complete experience from your PC, whether it is for playing games, streaming shows, or simply getting receiving your notifications. The problems that may occur on your computer can be hardware-related, software glitches, or just some new updates or setups. Whatever is the case with you, don’t worry, it is common to have these kinds of issues with your computer. Here are some of the fixes you can try.

No Sound From Computer Speakers in Windows 10
It can be frustrating when the speakers stop working on your Windows 10. Luckily, this OS is relatively straightforward for detecting configuration errors, and most problems are easily fixable without significant tech knowledge.
Check for Muted Speakers
- Click on the Volume icon on the right corner of your desktop, bottom-right next to the clock.
- Here you can make sure that it is muted or the volume is not turned down to the minimum.
- Check if the volume is enabled on the audio file you want to listen to. The sound won’t work until you turn the volume on there too.
Check Speaker Settings
- Right-click on the sound icon and click on “Playback devices.”
- Here you can make sure that there is a green tick next to the speakers, which tells us that the speakers are set to default.
- In the case you don’t see the green tick, which could be the source of your problems, you can always just click on “Set Default” and then on “OK” and your problem should be solved.
Uninstall and Reinstall Speakers
This can only happen if your speaker system was previously uninstalled, corrupted, or incompatible with your Windows 10. Follow these steps:
- Press the Windows logo key and “X” simultaneously and left-click on Device Manager from the pop-up menu.
- There you will find the “Sound, video and game controllers” option. Then you have to click on the sound icon and press the “Uninstall” button.
- After that, all you need to do is to restart your computer.
Update the Audio Driver
- Download and install Driver Easy using your internet browser.
- Run Driver Easy and click on the “Scan Now” button.
- The program will then scan your computer and find any problems. It should show you a few options, including the audio driver.
- Click on the “Update” button next to the audio driver settings. Alternatively, download the driver manually and install it.
No Sound Computer Speakers in Windows 7
There are very few differences between Windows 7 and Windows 10 in terms of troubleshooting. Problems with the sound system are mostly the same as well. If the steps for Windows 10 mentioned above have not worked for you, here are a few additional solutions to try.
Troubleshooting
- In the right-bottom corner of the screen, you will find the audio icon.
- Right-click the icon, then select “Troubleshoot sound problems.”
- There you can click on the “Find and fix audio playback problems,” and it will fix any problems it might detect.
- You can, but you don’t have to follow the on-screen troubleshooter. Windows 7’s troubleshooter isn’t perfect, but it still catches most errors.
Update Your Drivers
If the sound is still not working, a driver update can resolve the problem. The best way is to search on your internet browser, most commonly the speaker manufacturer’s website, to find what suits your computer and OS most.
No Sound Computer Speakers Windows 11
Windows 11 is still relatively new and rare but has inherited most of the options from previous Windows versions. When the sound stops working on your computer, it is almost always a misconfiguration. You can, of course, always use the already mentioned solutions, but on the slight chance it doesn’t fix your problems, here are a few more tips that will most surely fix your problems.
Restart Your Computer
Restarting your computer can be an effective way to resolve the problem. Since there could be some updates pending that need to be finished, you can help that process by restarting your computer. Restarting can also fix a temporary malfunction.
- To restart: Right-click the Start button and go to the “Shut down” or, in some cases, the “Sign out” button.
- You will find the “Restart” button there.
Attach Speakers to a Different Computer
By attaching your speakers to a different computer, you can see if the problem lies with the software or your speakers.
Undo Recent Updates
If your computer started running into audio problems after installing an update, a reroll can fix most of them. Depending on what you changed on your system recently or what you added to the system you can:
Uninstall a Program
- Open your Control Panel. You can find that in the “Start” menu.
- Choose the “Programs” menu and click on “Uninstall a program.”
- Here you can click on any recently added program and uninstall it.
Restore Running System
- Click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the page.
- Type in “System Restore” and click “Enter.”

Rollback a Driver
- To get to “System Settings,” you can use the “Windows key” + “I” as a shortcut.
- Here you can click on “System” and select the “About” menu.
- Now you select “Device Manager” and pick out the driver you want to roll back.
- Right-click on it, select “Properties,” and open the “Drivers” tab.
- Click on the “Roll Back Driver” button, here select the “Previous version of the driver performed better” and click “YES.”

With the latest features and fixes, you can solve your computer’s speaker problems.
- Open Settings and click on the “Update and Security” button to check for Windows updates.
- When you are finished, restart your computer.
No Sound Computer Speakers on a Mac
Apple products can be a little trickier than Windows operating systems for some internal problems. Speaker problems can happen to everyone, and Mac users aren’t exempt from them.
Before delving into the solutions, you need to isolate the problem.
If You Can’t Hear Sound From the Speakers
- Make sure to check if the volume is turned down or muted.
- Also it is always smart to try to play a different audio file, maybe the one you were playing is not working.
If the Computer’s Built-In Speakers Stop Working
- First try unplugging any headphones or external speakers.
- Then go to your Apple Menu, where you will find the System Preferences, and click on the “Sound” button.
- Here you have to make sure that the “Internal speakers” are selected and the “Output Sliders” slider is not all the way to the left.
Restart the Sound Controller
- Open “Activity Monitor” and find the “CoreAudiod” process.
- Select it and click on the “X” to quit the process. The process will then restart and, by doing so, should also fix your problem.
