How To Use an Amex, Mastercard, or Visa Gift Card on Amazon

So, you’ve received a gift card and have decided to use it to purchase something on Amazon. This should be an easy process – or so you would think. An Amex, Mastercard, or Visa gift card is easy to use for in-store purchases. Simply hand it to the cashier and your items are paid for. However, the process isn’t as easy when using them for an online Amazon purchase.

How To Use an Amex, Mastercard, or Visa Gift Card on Amazon

You may have some difficulty if you want to use one of these gift cards for an Amazon purchase. In this article, we’ll cover what you should know about how to use gift cards on Amazon.

Properly Register Your Gift Card

Before using your card, you’ll need to register it with its registered financial institution. Without performing this first crucial step, your card won’t work anywhere, not just on Amazon. Registering the gift card with Amex, Mastercard, or Visa is straightforward. Simply follow the online instructions for your card. Once properly verified, you’ll also be able to check the balance to find exactly how much is on the card. This will be required for one of the methods you use on Amazon.

Reload Your Amazon Balance

One way to use your gift card on Amazon after you’ve registered it with the issuing financial institution is to load your gift card balance into your Amazon account. You have the option of loading the card’s entire amount or a portion of it. Reloading your account means putting available funds there that you can use for future purchases. To do so, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Log in to your Amazon account.
  2. Using the top menu, locate and select “Gift Cards.”
  3. From this new page’s menu at the top of the screen, click on “Reload Your Balance.”
  4. Located on the right side of the screen, enter the amount you’d like to add from your gift card and hit “Buy Now.”
  5. For security purposes, you’ll need to log into your account again.
  6. Tap on “Add a credit or debit card.”
  7. Using the labeled fields, enter the gift card’s information. Once completed, press “Next.”
  8. Choose the new gift card as your method of payment.
  9. Pick “Done.”
  10. On the following page, confirm all your gift card information, and if correct, tap “Reload.”

You’ll now have the funds from your gift card available for Amazon purchases. A handy feature of using this method is that if your gift card has an expiration date, the funds added to your Amazon account won’t be affected by it. Even after the expiration date, the money will still be available in your Amazon account. This is a great way to not lose the money on the card if the expiration date is approaching and you aren’t ready to spend the money.

Adding a Gift Card as a Payment Method

An alternative to reloading your Amazon balance is to add your gift card as a payment method. This is similar to the other method but has a few differences. It does have its limitations. You’ll only be able to make purchases that are less than or equal to the amount on the gift card. If this isn’t an issue for you, here’s how it’s done:

  1. Navigate to Amazon and log in with your credentials.
  2. In the upper-right corner, select “Accounts & Lists.”
  3. Using the drop-down menu, choose “Account.”
  4. If prompted, enter your login information.
  5. Click on “Payment Options.”
  6. In the box that opens, add your gift card information as a new payment option.
  7. Tap “Done.”

Now, when making an Amazon purchase, you’ll have the option of using the gift card as a method of payment. As mentioned above, you can only purchase items that are less than or of equal value. At first, this may not seem like much of an issue. However, if you have $50 on the gift card and make a purchase that totals $47, you won’t have a way to spend that $3 later. Amazon doesn’t allow for the mixing of multiple payment methods, so with this option, you can’t transfer that $3 left on the gift card to another card and will lose the small balance.

Using a Gift Card to Purchase an Amazon Gift Card

If the two previous options don’t interest you, there’s another way you can use an Amex, Mastercard, or Visa gift card on Amazon. This method is a smart option if you have a gift card that only has a small balance on it and is nearing its expiration date. Amazon will allow you to pay for something by using your main payment method and the balance from an Amazon gift card. This is a smart way to not lose a couple of dollars that you have left on an old gift card. To do this, follow the instructions below:

  1. Make sure you’re logged in to your Amazon account.
  2. Using the search window, type in “Amazon egift card instant delivery email.”
  3. Select the first search result.
  4. Scroll down and locate “Enter amount.” Type in the amount that is left on your gift card.
  5. For “To,” enter your own email address, and for “Delivery Date,” choose “Now.”
  6. In the top-right corner, click the “Buy Now” button.
  7. For payment, select your gift card.
  8. You’ll receive an email from Amazon that contains an Amazon gift card code.

Once you’ve received the Amazon gift card code, you’ll need to load it into your Amazon account. It’s quick and easy to do. Fortunately, you don’t have to immediately use it. It can be stored in your Amazon gift card balance. Here’s how you do it.

  1. After you’ve logged in to your Amazon account, use the upper menu and select “Redeem a Gift Card.”
  2. In the window provided, type in your gift card claim code.
  3. Press “Apply to your balance.”

The next time you make an Amazon purchase, the funds in your balance will be subtracted from the item’s cost. If there’s not enough to cover the total, your primary payment method will be used to make up the balance. Although Amazon doesn’t permit splitting the cost of a purchase over multiple cards, you can use your primary payment method along with any gift card balance that’s available.

Using Gift Cards for Amazon Purchases Explained

Although not as easy as you might have thought, you can still use an Amex, Mastercard, or Visa gift card for online Amazon purchases. You can reload your Amazon balance, add the gift card as a payment method, or even use it to purchase an Amazon gift card. Each option only takes a few minutes and once completed, you’ve converted a gift card to a convenient payment method that you can easily use on Amazon.
