How To Fix “Class Not Registered” Error in Windows 10

Have you ever got a “Class not registered” error message in Windows 10? That’s due to incorrectly registered C++ classes in specific programs. It usually happens with the File Explorer, Edge and Internet Explorer browsers. If you’ve encountered class not registered error, here are a few ways to fix it.

Firstly, you can fix it with Component Services. You can open that by pressing the Win key + R to launch Run. Enter ‘dcomcnfg’ into Run to open the Component Services window in the snapshot below.

Next, click Component Services > Computers > My Computers. Then you can find DCOM Config listed on the window. Double-click DCOM Config there, and then a DCOM warning window will open. Click Yes on all the warning windows, and then restart Windows 10.

The class not registered issue is also linked with iCloud running in Windows. So consider removing that software if you’ve installed it. You should at least close iCloud when it’s running with the Task Manager by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Del hotkey, right-clicking iCloud and then selecting End Task. Or you could try a file scan with the Command Prompt. Open the Win + X menu by pressing the Win key + X, and then select Command Prompt (Admin) from there. Next, enter ‘sfc /scannow’ and press Return key to run the scan that might then make some required repairs.

The class not registered error can also happen if Edge is not configured as your default browser. Remember that Cortana Web searches are limited to the Edge browser and Bing. So is Google Chrome or Firefox your default browser? If so, restore Edge as your default browser.

Open Cortana and then type ‘default apps’ into the search box. Select Default app settings to open the window below. Those are four ways you could fix the class not registered issue in Windows 10. Selecting DCOM Config; removing iCloud; running a Command Prompt file scan or resetting Edge as the default Windows 10 browser could all do the trick.
