How To Delete Your Amazon Browsing History (Items You’ve Viewed)
Want to wipe the slate clean at Amazon? Fed up with the ‘people who bought X also bought Y’ push marketing? Want to keep your shopping habits to yourself? Here’s how to delete your Amazon browsing history and do just that.
Amazon made online shopping incredibly simple, with nearly everything you could want in one place. However, the company misses no opportunity to push an up-sell or related product into your shopping cart and try to squeeze just a little more cash out of your wallet. While deleting your Amazon browsing history won’t stop that, it will stop all the ‘also bought’ messages.
Clear your Amazon Browsing History
Maybe you bought something a little embarrassing. Maybe it’s a shared account and you don’t want to deal with a game of twenty questions about every purchase. Or maybe you just don’t want Amazon spamming you with suggestions after you browse items you don’t intend to buy. Whatever the reason, here’s how to manage your Amazon history.
Here is how to avoid falling into that pit trap.
How to Remove One Item From Your Viewing History
- Navigate to the Amazon home page.
- Hover over ‘Your Account’ in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select ‘Browsing History’ from the dropdown menu that appears.
- Select ‘Remove from View’ to remove an individual item.
If you have only one item you want to remove, this is the perfect, simple solution. But, Amazon also offers a few more options for you to take control of your Browsing History.
How to Remove All Items
If you want to clear your entire browsing history, you can easily do so. Follow the same steps described above to access the browsing history page, then do this:
- Click ‘Manage History’ in the upper right-hand corner.
- Click ‘Remove all items from view’
All of your previously viewed items will disappear all at once. If this sounds like a hassle, you can turn off the Browsing History feature all together.
How to Turn Off Browsing History
Turning off your browsing history is simple. It’s great when you no longer have Amazon constantly reminding you of the things you may have wanted at one time and decided against purchasing.
To turn off your browsing history, follow all of the steps above to access the ‘Browsing History’ page, and do this:
- Select ‘Manage History’ just as we did above.
- Toggle the ‘Turn browsing history on/off button’ so that it turns grey.
Some people have stated that the ‘Turn browsing history on/off’ toggle sometimes turns itself back on. If you begin seeing your browsing history appear or messages like under ‘Related to items you viewed’ and ‘Inspired by your shopping trends’, revisit the above process and repeat.
If you’re looking for a shortcut, you can also just visit this link to go straight to your browsing history page if you prefer.
How to Hide Amazon orders
Aside from hiding your browsing history, you can take it a step further and hide your orders too. This is incredibly useful if you’ve ordered a gift for someone who you share an account with.
Note: For obvious reasons, you cannot delete order records as companies are required by law to retain them for a given amount of time. Plus, Amazon can use order data for so many metrics both personalized for you and for larger-scale stock and purchasing.
Although it will not delete records, but it will hide them from the main Your Orders page. To hide your order history, do this:
- Navigate to the Amazon home page.
- Select ‘Your Orders’ from the dropdown option under ‘Account & Lists.’
- Browse your order history and select the ‘Archive Order’ located under the order.
- Confirm the hide order selection.
This will hide the item from view. You will need to then select View Hidden Orders on your account page and then Unhide Order to bring it back. This is an immensely useful feature for anyone who buys gifts from Amazon but doesn’t want curious family members trying to find out what you bought them, or for people who are just a bit forgetful and can never remember to log out of their account.
