Evernote is an established and popular note-taking cloud-based solution. Great for home and work-life management, it provides access to your notes anytime, anywhere. Though Evernote’s storage allowance is pretty decent, it’s easy to accumulate many sizeable notebooks.

If you need to create more space in your account or just need to get rid of the notebooks you no longer use, you’re in the right place. This article will show you how to delete your notebooks using various devices and what to do if the option is grayed out.
How to Delete an Evernote Notebook From a PC
You can access your Evernote account via the desktop app or Evernote Web using your PC or Mac. Follow these steps to delete your notebook using either option:
Desktop App
- Sign in to your account.
- Select “Notebooks” from the options in the left pane.
- Right-click on the notebook you wish to delete.
- Choose “Delete notebook” from the options. The notes will move automatically to the “Trash.”
Evernote Web
- Navigate to Evernote Web and sign in to your account.
- From the options in the left pane, click “Notebooks.”
- Open the notebook you want to delete.
- In the notebook header at the top of the note list, click the three-dotted “More actions” icon.
- Choose “Delete notebook.” The notes will be moved to “Trash.”
For the older version of Evernote Web:
- Sign in and select the “Notebooks” option.
- Find then open the notebook you want to delete.
- Select the “Note Info” (i) icon in the notebook header.
- Click “Delete notebook.” Your notes will be sent to “Trash.”
How to Delete an Evernote Notebook From an iPhone
Deleting a notebook from the mobile app is just as straightforward as using a PC. Here’s how to delete an Evernote notebook using your iPhone:
- Open the “Evernote” app.
- Tap the hamburger menu icon at the top left corner.
- Press “Notebooks.”
- Tap the notebook you wish to delete.
- The notebook information will display. Tap the three-dotted menu icon in the top right corner.
- Press “Delete Notebook.”

Why is Delete Notebook Grayed Out?
One of your notebooks is set as default, and the delete option for that notebook will be unavailable. To get around this, set another notebook as default:
1. Choose another notebook, then select the “Set as default” option.
2. Now, go back to the notebook you wanted to delete, and the “Delete” option should be available.
Can I Restore a Deleted Notebook?
You can’t restore a notebook once it’s deleted, as the notes are moved to the “Trash,” and the empty notebook is removed permanently from your account.
However, you can restore the individual notes from “Trash” by:
1. Opening the note you want to restore from “Trash.”
2. Click the three-dotted icon for “More actions.”
3. Choose “Restore note.”
Once the notes are restored, you can create a new notebook to contain them.
Why Isn’t Evernote Allowing Me to Delete a Notebook?
If the notebook you want to delete is set as default, the delete option will be grayed out. Set another notebook as default, then the option to delete will be available.
