How to Schedule a Gmail to Send at a Later Date/Time

There are many benefits to scheduling an email and sending it at a later date, rather than right away. It gives you extra time to make modifications and to ensure that the recipient gets it at a convenient time, among many other reasons. Pre-planning an email and having it automatically send is the perfect way to clear some space in your calendar.

How to Schedule a Gmail to Send at a Later Date/Time

Perhaps you’d like to prepare an email that goes out Monday morning while you’re still asleep. Google’s line of helpful software is another great addition to the digital age. Let’s take a look at how to schedule a Gmail for desktops, Androids, and iOS-based devices.

Desktop Guide

Log into your Gmail account and follow these next steps:

  1. Click on the Compose button.
  2. Type your recipient information.
  3. Write up your email.
  4. Click the dropdown arrow next to the Send button.
  5. Click on the Schedule send option.
  6. Use one of the three available options or pick a specific date & time from the calendar.

Note that the preset schedule times are for the next morning, the same afternoon, or the day after that. But if you’re trying to schedule an email in your Gmail account on a Friday, your third option will be for Monday morning and not the weekend. Times are also displayed in your own time zone. Keep that in mind when you want to schedule sending emails to people in different time zones.

Android Guide

You can also schedule sending emails from the Android Gmail app. Here’s what you have to do:

  1. Launch the Gmail app from your Home Screen or Apps Screen.
  2. Tap the Compose button.
  3. Type the recipient information.
  4. Type your email and add files if necessary.
  5. Tap on the More button.
  6. Select the Schedule send option.
  7. Pick the desired time.

You can schedule up to 100 emails, even from within the Android app.

iOS Guide

The process of scheduling emails in the iOS version of the Gmail app is the same as the Android process.

  1. Launch the Gmail app from your Home Screen or Apps Screen.
  2. Tap the Compose button.
  3. Type the sender information.
  4. Type your email and add files if necessary.
  5. Tap on the More button.
  6. Select the Schedule send option.

How to Cancel Scheduled Emails

The great thing about scheduling emails is that you don’t have to risk sending something wrong or that you might regret the very second after writing up the email. What’s even better is that all your scheduled emails can be canceled way in advance, or even with just a few seconds to spare.

Cancel Scheduled Emails on Desktop

  1. Go into your Gmail account.
  2. Go to the left panel menu and click the Scheduled tab.
  3. Select one or more emails you want to cancel.
  4. Look in the upper right corner of a selected email for the Cancel Send button.
  5. Click and move on to other emails.

Cancel Scheduled Emails on Android and iOS

  1. Bring up the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the three-line Menu icon.
  3. Tap the Scheduled option.
  4. Browse the email list and open the email in question.
  5. Tap the Cancel send button.

Note that none of the scheduled emails that you cancel will get deleted. Instead, they’ll be moved into the draft folder so you can still send them at a later date, should you change your mind again.

Can Scheduled Emails Be Changed?

Yes, they can. Gmail allows users to do many things including altering the schedule at any time.

Desktop Guide

  1. Go into your Gmail account from your favorite browser.
  2. Click the Scheduled button in the left panel.
  3. Find and select the email you want.
  4. Click the Cancel Send option.
  5. Make any changes you want.
  6. Click the dropdown arrow next to the Send button.
  7. Click on the Schedule Send button and pick a new delivery date.

Android and iOS Guide

  1. Launch the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the Menu button.
  3. Tap on the Scheduled option.
  4. Hit the Cancel send button on a selected email.
  5. Edit the email.
  6. Tap the More button in the upper right corner.
  7. Tap on Schedule Send.
  8. Select a new date.

The canceled email will be saved as a draft. You can go back and add attachments, write new content, anything you would normally do with a brand new email. You see, this is one of the main reasons why canceled scheduled emails don’t just get deleted. It allows users to make modifications at any given point in time up to the due date. Whether the modifications are in regards to the text, uploaded files, or the actual set date.

Can You Schedule a Gmail in Outlook?

Outlook is a one-stop-shop service for all of your email accounts. Whether you’re using Gmail and your work email together, Outlook users may experience some limitations with the scheduling feature.

Only the Outlook application has the option that allows users to send an email at a later date and time. To send an email later in Outlook do this:

  1. Click on the option to compose a new message in the upper left-hand side of the app
  2. Click the ‘To:’ box to add your recipient(s)
  3. Add your subject and content
  4. Locate the very small arrow next to the ‘Send’ option in the left-hand corner
  5. Click ‘Send Later’
  6. Set your date and time in the pop-up box
  7. Click ‘Send’

Unfortunately, the browser version of Outlook won’t have this option so you will have to download the application if you’d like to use the schedule email feature.

Biggest Advantage for Scheduling an Email

Probably one of the most important things about using this Gmail function is that no matter what may happen to your internet connection or your free time at some point down the line, your Gmail “secretary” can still deliver the email to the person or persons you want at the desired time. It’s really like having your own personal little helper.

If you have trouble keeping up with tasks, you can use this feature in Gmail to help you complete things more seamlessly.

Not only can you pretend to work while you’re actually out fishing on a nearby lake, but you can also set an email to automatically send to your spouse every year on your anniversary (until the year 2068 at least).
