What can you do if your iPhone XR stops receiving incoming calls?

In many cases, this problem comes from selecting the wrong settings on your phone. You may be able to solve it in a few easy steps.

However, there can also be more serious software issues at hand. Hardware malfunctions are another possibility, so it’s not always possible to repair your phone from your home.

You can’t know for sure what the problem is until you start repairing it. So let’s look at some of the potential reasons why your phone isn’t receiving calls.

Airplane Mode Might Be Turned On

On the iPhone XR, Airplane Mode is available on the Control Center. To open the Control Center, swipe down from the upper-right corner of your screen. Select the airplane icon and make sure that this function is disabled.

You can also access Airplane Mode by tapping on Settings > General.

Do Not Disturb or Call Forwarding Might Be Turned On

You might have turned on Do Not Disturb by accident. To turn it back off, go into Settings > Do Not Disturb. Tap on the option to turn it off.

To disable Call Forwarding, follow these steps:

3. Select Call Forwarding

4. Switch It Off

You might also have added the caller to your blocked call list. Go into Settings > Phone > Blocked to see the list of blocked callers.

Your Phone Might Be Set to the Wrong SIM Card

The iPhone XR allows you to use dual SIM cards, and there is also an eSIM card option.

You can choose which SIM card is active on your phone. If you accidentally chose the wrong option, some of your callers won’t be able to reach you. To check which SIM is active at the moment, go into Settings > Cellular.

For ease of use, make sure to label your SIM cards clearly. Many users label one plan Personal and the other Work. Note that it’s possible to receive calls to both plans at the same time.

The SIM Card May Be in the Wrong Position

There’s also a chance that the problem comes from the SIM card getting smudged or moving out of place. Open your SIM card tray with the ejector tool to check if this is the case. If you don’t have the tool nearby, you can also use a paperclip or a staple.

Carefully clean your SIM card and inspect it for physical damage. When you place it back on the tray, make sure that the gold contact is on the bottom side and that it’s locked into place before you close the tray.

The Network May Be Impacted by a Software Glitch

If the above steps don’t work, you may need to fix your iPhone’s network connection.

1. Go into Settings

2. Select General

3. Tap on Reset

4. Choose “Reset Network Settings”

At this point, you might need to enter your phone’s passcode. Confirm the reset when you’re done.

Resetting your network is usually enough to get rid of the problem. If it doesn’t work, you may want to perform a soft reset, using the Power Off button and the Volume Down button.
