We should also mention that if you’re struggling to find something you like, it might be worth signing up to Amazon First Reads, or even Amazon Kindle Unlimited

Amazon First Reads, formerly known as Kindle First, isn’t free (unless you’re an Amazon Prime member), but it does offer early access to new books, handpicked by Amazon’s editors, for 99p. You can also buy print editions, up to 10 copies of each title, from £3.99. Kindle Unlimited is more expensive, at £7.99 a month, but gives you unlimited book downloads from a catalogue of 1 million.

Free Kindle Books: Amazon Best Sellers

The obvious place to start when you’re hunting for free Kindle books is Amazon’s own library, and to get the most popular, try its Best Sellers page. This page is updated hourly with what’s selling well across all departments but you can filter it using the menu on the left-hand side.

Go to Kindle Store via the drop-down list under Any Department and choose Books. To the right you’ll see small tabs – Top 100 Paid and Top 100 Free. Select Top 100 Free and, as the name suggests, you’ll see the top 100 most popular free ebooks.

Frustratingly it’s not possible to filter these results further based on star rating or number of reviews, for example, but you can narrow it down based on genre. If you want to invest the time, you can scroll through the list and see the star ratings with number of reviews under each book cover.

This site will give you the same results as those on Amazon’s list of free Kindle books but has much more user-friendly filters. On the left, you can select deals under £1, current freebies, set the minimum and maximum price or discount, length, and genre. When you select freebies you’ll also get options to see how long it’s been free.

Free Kindle Books: Kindle Unlimited

Ok, this isn’t technically free as you need a Prime membership to access Kindle Unlimited, but once registered you don’t need to pay for any of the books on this scheme. Plus, in addition to a load of great free Kindle books, your Prime membership comes with one-day delivery, Prime Music, Prime Video, discounted Amazon Music Unlimited plus more.

Kindle Unlimited offers unlimited access to more than 1 million books, magazines, and unlimited audiobooks.

You can buy Prime for £79 a year or £7.99 a month. Plus you can sign up for a 30-day free trial to give it a go before committing to a subscription.

Free Kindle Books: Kindle Owners Lending Library

In addition to Kindle Unlimited, Kindle owners on Amazon Prime can borrow more than 600,000 free Kindle books with no due dates, including current and former best sellers and all seven Harry Potter books, with the Kindle Owners Lending Library.

Free Kindle Books: is like Kindle Owners Lending Library without the £79 yearly fee for Prime. It matches people who want to borrow books with people who have free Kindle books to lend. After you register with an email address, for free you can search through the Kindle library.
