Google is drawing the line at adverts for essay writing services aimed at cash-rich time-poor students.
Following complaints from academic bodies, the search giant is adding the services to its advertising blacklist, which already includes goods such as tobacco and firearms.
Specifically, Google’s AdWords policy will not allow ad texts and sites that promote ‘academic paper-writing services’ or the sale of pre-written essays, theses, and dissertations.
Google said the company regularly reviews AdWords content policies, and will make changes to keep them ‘current and effective’.
‘The Google advertising program is managed by a set of policies which we develop based on several factors, including user and customer experience,’ said a spokesperson. ‘This change was based on several factors.’
To the displeasure of the companies affected – Google will be a major source of traffic for such services – the ban will be imposed from next month. A Google spokesperson told us that all affected companies had already been informed.
