In an age when we are constantly on our phones getting messages and emails, being on top of it all can be a useful skill to have. When you need to find an email from a month ago, it can be time-consuming and frustrating going through all your emails. Luckily, Gmail has some tricks up its sleeve you can use to find the email you are looking for much quicker. Here are some of the fastest ways to sort through your emails.

How to Order by Sender in Gmail on an iPhone
If you don’t have time to go home and sit in front of your PC and sort your emails, you can always do it on your trusted iPhone. Every smartphone has a Gmail app that behaves similarly to Gmail on your browser. To order emails on the iPhone by who sent them, you need to follow these steps:
- Open your Gmail app and sign into your account if you haven’t already.
- Tap the search button.
- Type in the email address you are searching for.
- Press on the blue search button at the bottom right corner.
- You’ll get a list of all emails to or from that address.
It is important to note that the iOS Gmail app doesn’t let you filter emails further. For that, you will need to use an internet browser, where you can use advanced sorting and filtering criteria.
How to Order by Sender in Gmail on an Android device
The Gmail app on Android devices is not much different than it is on iPhone smartphones, especially when it comes to certain features and tricks. It can get pretty hectic getting a lot of emails and having your inbox full. Here is the step-by-step solution:
- Open Gmail on your phone.
- Select the search bar on the top and type in the sender’s name or email address.
- Tap on the search icon on the bottom right or below the search bar.
- Gmail will display all emails that contain the address.
Quick Notes:
If you are not quite sure about the sender’s name or email address, you can always type in the subject of the email you are looking for in the search box. Gmail will sort emails that contain the search term anywhere, including the subject.
You can also type in any word in the search bar. For example, if you are looking for an email from your professor and can’t remember his email address, you can just type in words like “exam” or anything mentioned in that email.
Make sure to regularly delete emails you don’t use or require. This helps your Gmail work better and you can avoid not getting your emails because of a full inbox.
How to Order by Sender in Gmail on a PC
If you are receiving emails by the dozens, you know the struggle of finding that one email from the pile. Going through promotional emails alone can be quite a hassle. A smartphone might not provide seamless filtering and sorting, and some results can worm their way to waste your time.
Here are some browser-specific tricks you can do with your Gmail messages.
Method 1: Email From a Specific Person
Type in the email address of the person you are looking for, press “Enter,” then pick out the email you need.
Method 2: Looking for Specific Information in Gmail
What if you are looking for a specific email from someone? Let’s say your professor, who has told you the time of your next exam via Gmail. Suppose you know your professor’s email address and when the email was approximately sent.
- Type in the email address in the search bar at the top of the page, next to the Gmail icon.
- Click on the filter icon next to the search bar and a pop-up window should appear. The advanced search window contains several criteria.
- In the “Has the words” field, you can type in the name of the exam you are looking for.
- In the “Date within” field, you can type in the date you’ve received your email if you know it. Also, you can pick out if you want to search through all mail or just the “Primary” section.
- After picking out your criteria for your search, click on the “Search” button, and it will search through your emails, presenting you with ones that match these requirements.
Method 3
Let’s say you want to clean your emails because they contain large attachments from former colleagues or professors. Gmail offers plenty of storage but not an infinite amount, and you might want to delete some to save up some email storage. If that is what you need, then you’ll have to do the following:
- Log into your Gmail account and click the search bar.
- Type in the email address and hit “Enter” to display all emails from that email address.
- If you are looking for more than one email address but all of them have the same domain name, you can use the wildcard functionality. Use an asterisk (*) and then the domain name, for example *@techna.com.
After that, you can just select the emails you want to delete and remove them by selecting the bin button.
More Mail, More Problems
Sorting through your emails isn’t an exact science and can take a bit of time getting the hang of various filters and tricks. However, it will make searching for the exact thing you need much quicker and almost effortless once you pick it up. Gmail provides significant automated help, which is a part of the reason it’s one of the most popular email platforms.
