How to Pin an Open App to Taskbar

You’ll find the Start menu (and Task View and Widgets) pinned to the Windows 11 taskbar by default. However, it’s also possible to add additional applications to it, even the ones running on your computer right now. Taskbar icons appear whenever you launch a new app. Pin the app to the taskbar by following these steps:

  1. Right-click or press-and-hold on the taskbar app’s icon
  2. Select Pin to taskbar.

How to Pin an App from the Start Menu

If you often use an app from the Start menu, you may save yourself a step by pinning it to the taskbar.

  3. Select Pin to taskbar.

The Start Menu in Windows 11 is limited to a few programs, so you may not be able to pin the one you want. If you want to see more applications to pin them, here’s how:

  1. Click the All apps located at the top right of the screen.
  2. Right-click or press and hold on to an app in the All Apps list.

  3. Go to the three-dot menu and select Settings and more, followed by More Tools and Pin to Taskbars.

It is possible to pin websites and webpages that you browse in Chrome instead of Microsoft Edge. For example, you may set up a shortcut such that when you click on its icon in the taskbar, Chrome and Gmail open immediately. You can do this by following these steps:

  1. In Google Chrome, open Gmail.
  2. Type in your email address and select Next on the Sign-in page.
  3. Don’t enter your password on the following page. Instead, click or tap the three-dot menu.
  4. Go to More Tools, followed by Create a Shortcut.
  5. You’ll be asked to give the shortcut a name. In this section, you can customize the shortcut to be easier to identify.
  6. Click Create when you’re finished.
  7. You’ll see a Gmail shortcut on your computer’s desktop. To pin the shortcut to your taskbar, just right-click or press-and-hold the shortcut icon.

On your taskbar, the page icon will appear as the “G” logo of Google. Now all you have to do is click on it and enter your Gmail password. Fortunately, Gmail isn’t the only place you can use this function. You can easily pin any webpage to your taskbar by following these instructions.

Use Your Taskbar to the Fullest

With all the possibilities that the Windows 11 taskbar gives its users, accessing your go-to files and applications is easier than ever. However, it’s recommended that you don’t clutter your taskbar with too many applications. Pin only the things you use most often to avoid this.

Chris says:
The folder pin to taskbar would be handy if it was working like in previous version of Windows: When clicking on it, it show a popup menu showing every app inside of the folder. This way i was able to group my applications (dev, office, network folders, etc)… but now, you have to double click on it, then it open an explorer window… which is not really faster than just opening explorer and access a Quick Access shortcut that you have added on the left.
