[BEST FIX] – 0x80070005 in Windows 10

The 0x80070005 error is a Windows Update error that causes the computer to fall behind on fixes and improvements. While it isn’t a critical error, anything that gets in the way of Windows keeping itself updated is something you need to avoid wherever possible. If you need to fix 0x80070005 errors in Windows 10, this tutorial is for you.

There are a couple things that can interrupt Windows Update, including Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers, certain antivirus software and an internal Windows Update error. I’ll show you how to tackle all of them. I’ll begin with the internal error as it is the easiest to do.

Fix 0x80070005 errors in Windows

Windows stores its updates in the SoftwareDistribution folder on your Windows drive. If you rename it to something else and run Windows Update it will recreate that folder and download any partial updates. If the update became corrupted, this is a sure way to fix it.

1. Navigate to C:Windows and find the SoftwareDistribution folder.
2. Right click and rename it to SoftwareDistribution.old
3. Navigate to Settings, Update & security and click Check for updates.
4. Let Windows Update run.

As Windows Update runs, you should see it recreate the SoftwareDistribution folder. It will also download any files it needs to perform updates. Suffice to say this method isn’t the most efficient if you have a limited data tariff but for those on broadband or cable, should work perfectly. Otherwise:

For machines not running RAID, you don’t need to run Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers. So you can safely install them.

1. Right click the Windows start button and select Programs and Features.
2. Select Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers and click uninstall.
3. Follow the uninstallation wizard to remove the drivers.

If you’re uncomfortable removing the drivers, check Intel for updated ones.

1. Navigate to the Intel Driver Update Utility page.
2. Download the update and run it.
3. Allow it to scan and suggest the latest drivers.
4. Download and install those drivers.

Finally, if those two methods don’t work and you use McAfee security, you’re going to need to update it or remove it either temporarily or permanently. It has been known to interfere with Windows Update, so best try an update first and then get rid of it and replace it with something else if an update doesn’t work.

1. Update your McAfee software to its latest version.
2. Reboot your computer and retest.
3. If the 0x80070005 error reappears, uninstall McAfee.
4. Right click the Windows start button and select Programs and Features.
5. Select McAfee and click uninstall. Reboot your computer once complete.
6. Retest Windows Update. If the update succeeds without the error, download another security suite.

Usually, renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder is enough to stop the 0x80070005 error. In case it does not, there are two other ways to address the error. One of them is bound to work!
