How To Add Amazon Prime Video to Roku

Want to add Amazon Prime Video to Roku? Having issues with playing content through the channel? Want to know a way to get it working so you can get on with viewing? This tutorial will show you all that and more.

One of the coolest things about owning a Roku is the almost infinite ways you can customize it to your particular needs. You can add channels, tweak its look and feel and make it truly your media player. Considering how cheap it is, the Roku competes very well with the Firestick. Especially when you can add Amazon Prime Video as a channel.

I don’t know how long you will be able to use Amazon Prime Video on Roku. Now Roku has launched its own premium subscriptions it is a little more of a competitor rather than compatriot and Amazon has a habit of trying to penalize competitors. For now at least, you can watch Amazon Prime Video on Roku so you may as well make the most of it.

Add Amazon Prime Video to Roku

Amazon Prime Video is a channel on Roku so if you know how to add channels, you can  skip all this and go to it. If you haven’t added a channel yet, this is how you do it.

  • Turn on everything so you’re at the Roku home screen.
  • Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  • Select Streaming Channels from the left menu to open the Channel Store.
  • Scroll or search for Amazon Prime Video.
  • Select Add Channel from within the Amazon Prime Video page.

Your channel should now appear alongside all your others.

If you use the Roku mobile app, you can add Amazon Prime Video from there too.

  • Open the app on your phone.
  • Select the Channels icon at the bottom and select Channel Store.
  • Browse or search for Amazon Prime Video and select it.
  • Select Add Channel.

When you get home and fire up your Roku, the channel should be ready to go.

If you’re on a desktop computer, you can add the channel from the Roku website. Navigate to this page and select Add Channel. As long as you are signed in with your Roku account, the channel will be added to your lineup.

Once you have added Amazon Prime Video to Roku, you will need to log into the channel with your Amazon account details. As it’s a subscription channel you will need to do this and have Roku save the details for later use.

Troubleshooting channels on Roku

In the vast majority of cases, adding a channel to Roku is a seamless experience. Select to add the channel, wait a little while for the Roku servers to catch up and you can select the channel on your device. Occasionally things do go wrong though.

If you tried to add Amazon Prime Video to Roku and it won’t play audio, video is of poor quality or media just won’t play there are some troubleshooting steps you can take to fix it.

Reboot your Roku

Rebooting a Roku is just like a computer when it doesn’t work properly. It resets memory, clears any misconfigurations and makes the system load the operating system again. This can be enough to fix your issue.

Use the Roku menu and select Settings and System. Select System restart from the right menu. Let the box reboot and try again.

Check the network

Roku depends on a decent internet connection to provide the viewing quality it is known for. Check to make sure your network is reachable and working okay. Select Settings and Network from within the Roku menu and check signal strength if you’re using WiFi or connection status if using Ethernet.

If you have a phone or laptop close to hand, check the internet connection there too. That’s especially useful if you’re using WiFi.

Check audio settings

Occasionally when you add a new channel to Roku, the audio settings get misconfigured. It’s a quick check and the first thing to try if you’re getting audio issues with Amazon Prime Video on Roku. Select Settings and Audio and check your audio output is set correctly.

Remove the channel and reinstall it

If your Roku is working well aside from Amazon Prime Video and you have tried these other steps, it might be worth removing the channel and adding it again. This can be necessary sometimes where channels need a secondary login like Amazon does.

  • Go to the Roku home screen and select the Amazon Prime Video channel.
  • Select the star button on the remote to access the channel menu.
  • Select Remove Channel and confirm your choice.

Then just add the channel again as above.

It is simple to add Amazon Prime Video to Roku and it should work fine the first time you do it. If things do go wrong you now have several ways to fix it. Hope it helps!

I installed Prime Video as one of ROKU channels. The channel opens but I can on every movie I select I am asked to sign up for Prime. I already have Prime. I can not find anywhere to sign in on the home page. I have looked at your tips as well as many others and don’t see any useful help. When the advice is to sign in on the home page, I see no place to do that on any menu.
