Apple may have changed the landscape of mobile phones with its iPhone, but it was really Nokia who helped get mobile phones to the masses in the ’90s and ’00s. While the 3310 may be familiar to most, it was the 5110 that really kick-started the craze for pocketable mobile phones.
To think that its 84 x 48-pixel screen was all you needed to enjoy a game of Snake or meticulously craft a new text message is now laughable. Now we want high-resolution, high-contrast AMOLED displays instead of monochrome LCD and if a screen’s resolution is 720p, just forget about it.
So, it’s clear that screen technology has changed dramatically in the last 17 years, but the extent to which it has evolved is just stratospheric. Granted, hundreds of old Nokia displays won’t help repair that horrible smashed up iPhone screen.
