How To Delete All Bookmarks in Firefox

Being able to bookmark a website is still essential to speed up the browsing experience for casual users and those that need to find quick solutions at work. However, we don’t always bookmark just essential websites.

It’s easy to bookmark a website that you may want to revisit in two hours just to revisit a short paragraph. But who remembers to remove it from the list later on? – Almost no one. While this does ensure that the page is saved for a long time it also means that clutter is essentially unavoidable.

Learning to manage your bookmarks is important. Even though having hundreds of bookmarks doesn’t drain more resources while the browser is running, having to deal with the chaos kind of defeats the purpose of having these shortcuts in the first place.

If you’re a Firefox user, here are some tips and tricks on how to manage, delete, and modify bookmarks to ensure that they’re saving you time instead of wasting it.

Library Dialog

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + B to open Library dialog
  2. Click Bookmarks menu
  3. Select the top item on the list
  4. Press Shift + End to select every entry
  5. Right click and select Delete

You can also use the Library dialog interface to create folders.

  1. Select the Bookmarks toolbar, menu, or field
  2. Right click on the right panel to open the context menu
  3. Select New Folder

You can use the drag-and-drop feature to add new bookmarks to your new folder.

Profile Folder

Bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions, toolbars, and everything that you save when using Firefox is saved in a folder called Profile. By default, this folder is not saved in the same parent folder with Firefox. This prevents a reinstallation of the program to damage your saved data.

By deleting the Profile folder, you can quickly remove your bookmarks. But at the same time you would also remove any other saved information. Use this only as a last resort.

  1. Open the Run dialog box or Search box
  2. Type %APPDATA%MozillaFirefoxProfiles
  3. Wait for the list of profiles to load

Pick the profile you’re using the most. If you have only one Firefox profile, choose the one with the word “default” in its name. Delete the profile to remove all saved information. In order for this to work, you have to close Firefox first and any Firefox extensions that may be running in the background.

Windows 7

  1. Press the Windows key
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Select Appearance and Personalization
  4. Select Folder Options
  5. Go to the View tab
  6. Select Advanced settings
  7. Choose the Show hidden files, folders, and drives option
  8. Press OK

Windows 10

  1. Open the taskbar’s Search box
  2. Type folder
  3. Browse the list of results and select Show hidden files and folders
  4. Select Advanced settings
  5. Choose the Show hidden files, folders, and drives option

Potential Problems You May Encounter While Deleting Bookmarks

If you want to delete the Profile folder to erase your Firefox saved data, know that the APPDATA folder is usually hidden by default. If it doesn’t appear in the search box, you will have to unhide it first. Follow the above steps for Windows 7 or 10.

How to Edit Bookmarks

Bookmarks can always be renamed. You can do this when you’re saving a relevant address by designating a specific tag or name to quickly spot it in the list. Using a shorter name than the default version should also make it easier to find when using the search function in your bookmark manager.

Click on the bookmark that leads to your desired website. Click the star icon to open the edit menu. From the dialog box that appears, you can change the name and the folder assigned to the bookmark. You can also add or change the tags associated with it.

But that’s not all. You can also change or update the URL of a saved bookmark. Right click on the bookmark that you want to edit and select Properties. Type or copy the new address in the Location field. Press Save.

A Final Thought

Although many users today seem to prefer Chrome over Firefox, Mozilla’s browser still has a large and loyal following. Its customization options are vast and very easy to use. Their bookmark section management is a great example of that.

The fact that you can delete all the data by just deleting one file is perhaps even more attractive than the sorting options. It lets you remove all the mess in one fell swoop and start fresh. It’s also a quick way of removing sensitive saved websites.
