How to Disable Chrome Notifications

One of the neat features of Google Chrome is that by default it notifies you when a site or a service wants to send you notifications. It allows you to control and manage notifications you receive.

However, seeing the notification prompt pop up often might be too much for some. If you’re tired of these notifications and want to turn them off completely, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll cover Android, Chrome OS, desktop, and iOS versions of Chrome.

How Do Chrome Notifications Function?

Chrome is by default set to alert the user when a website, extension, or app attempts to start sending them notifications. This is a very useful feature, as it allows you to handpick sites and apps you want to allow notifications from.

On the other hand, Chrome’s Incognito mode doesn’t show notifications. That’s because you’re browsing anonymously and websites and apps can’t target you for commercials, notifications, and offers.

However, if you don’t want to click “No, thanks” on every notification you get in the standard browsing mode, you can disable these notifications.

Disabling Notifications in Chrome on an Android

If you’re on an Android device, Chrome is your default browser. At the moment of this writing, it is the main browser Android users use to search the web, though some opt for Firefox, Opera, and other browsers.

Chrome for Android allows you to turn off notifications completely, as well as for certain sites and apps. Here’s how to turn them off completely:

1. Launch Chrome on your smartphone or tablet.
   
2. Next, tap on the More button (three vertical dots) in the upper-right corner of the screen.
   
3. Now, tap on the Settings tab.
   
4. When the Settings menu opens, you should tap on the Site Settings tab.
   
5. Next, go into the Notifications section.
   
6. There, you will see the list of sites you denied and the list of sites you allowed the right to send you notifications. At the top of the screen, you’ll see the Notifications heading. Tap on the slider switch to its right to toggle the notifications off.
   

This will disable notifications for all sites. If you’d like to disable them only for certain sites, follow these steps:

1. Launch Chrome.
   
2. Next, navigate to the site you want to prevent from sending you notifications.
   
3. Then, tap on the More button in the upper-right corner.
   
4. Now, select the Info option.
   
5. Next, go to Permissions.
   
6. Open the Notifications section.
   
7. Finally, select the Block option or toggle off Allow notifications.
   

If you can’t see the Block and Allow options, that particular site can’t send notifications.

Disabling Notifications in Chrome on a Chromebook

Chromebooks, the Google Pixel, and all other devices running Chrome OS have Chrome installed as their default web browser. Some users do install other browsers, but Chrome is still dominant.

Similar to many other platforms, you can turn off Chrome notifications on your Chromebook, as well. You can choose between disabling them completely and blocking certain sites. Follow these steps to get rid of the notifications:

1. Launch Chrome on your Chromebook laptop.
2. Click on the More icon (three vertical dots) to the right of the address bar.
   
3. Next, go to the Settings section of the menu.
   
4. Go to the Privacy and security section.
   
5. Click on the Site Settings tab.
6. When the Site Settings section opens, you should select Notifications.
7. Click on the slider switch next to Ask before sending to turn off all notifications. If you want to block a certain site, you should click on the Add button next to the Block heading. Write the name of the site in the text box and click on the Add button.

Disabling Notifications in Chrome on a Computer

Chrome is the most popular web browser on desktop and laptop computers running the Windows operating systems. However, it is still far behind Safari on the Mac platform. If you want to disable Chrome notifications on a computer, you should follow the steps below. These work on Windows, Linux, and macOS.

1. Launch Chrome on your desktop computer or laptop.
2. Click on the More icon to the right of your profile icon, its icon is three vertical dots.
   
3. Next, click on the Settings option in the drop-down menu.
   
4. Now either scroll down the page and locate the Privacy and security section or click on it in the menu on the left-side of the screen.
   
5. Next, you should click on the Site Settings option within it.
   
6. After that, click on Notifications.
   
7. To block all notifications in one fell swoop, you should select Don’t allow sites to send notifications.
   
   

If you’d like to turn off notifications for individual sites, you should click on the Add button next to Block. Type in the name of the site you’d like to block and click on the Add button.

Disabling Notifications in Chrome on a Mac

You can also disable Chrome notifications on your Mac via Notification Center. Here’s how to do it:

1. Click on the Bell icon and launch the Notification Center on your Mac.
2. Click on the Settings icon (little cog).
3. Uncheck the boxes next to sites and services you don’t want to receive notifications from.

You should have in mind that Chrome will continue to notify you when you install new add-ons or apps. For maximum results, combine this method with the one in the Computer section of the article.

iOS

Chrome is a popular web browser on the iOS platform, but Safari still rules supreme. The iOS version of the browser offers a slightly limited set of options and abilities than its desktop and Android counterparts. Among other things, Chrome for iOS can’t show you notifications.
