How to Factory Reset Leapfrog Explorer

Equipped with a touchscreen, the Leapfrog Leapster Explorer is designed to help kids learn by playing interesting games. All of these games are focused on teaching kids how to read, do math, and other things that are essential for kids to learn. The screen resolution is close to HD quality, so it’s pretty awesome for a toy. The Leapster Explorer also comes with a stylus so that kids can write on the screen.

With that said, these electronic devices will run into problems from time to time. As a parent, you might have encountered situations where your child’s Leapster Explorer didn’t work as intended. This could include an unresponsive screen, or perhaps the games would occasionally freeze for no reason.

In light of this, we have created this guide to walk you through some of these common issues that may come up with the Leapfrog Leapster Explorer.

Turn It Off and Then On Again

The most basic of all solutions to a misbehaving electronic device is to simply turn it off and then turn it back on again. This will sometimes fix the issue as the system gets to start afresh. Whether it’s the screen or anything else that’s not responding, switching the device off and then back on is the first thing you should try.

Do a Factory Reset

So, you’ve shut down your Leapster Explorer and it’s still not working properly when you turn it back on? It’s time to do something a bit more drastic. You can perform a factory reset on your device so that it goes back to how it was when it left the factory. This can fix many issues but at a cost. Doing a factory reset on any device will wipe all your settings and data, meaning that any progress made will be lost.

If you still want to do a factory reset, here’s how. It’s very simple, just follow these few steps:

  1. Plug your Leapster Explorer into Leapfrog Connect.
  2. Select the profile under Leapster Explorer.
  3. Click on
  4. Now, find and click the Reset

If you are not using Leapfrog Connect, you can also do this from the Parent’s Settings menu. To access the Parent’s Settings menu, you need to do the following:

Step 1

Turn off your Leapster Explorer. Once you turn it back on, wait for the sign-in menu to appear. While in the sign-in menu, press the Left D-pad button and the Hint button at the same time. This will bring up the Parent’s Menu.

Step 2

From here, just find the Settings option. Once you click on Settings, you will have some options to choose from. Navigate this menu and find the option called Reset. After clicking on the Reset option, just read and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Other Useful Things in Parent’s Settings

The Parent’s Settings menu offers a lot more than just the option to reset your device. From this menu, you can also delete profiles, change the language or time, and even calibrate the screen. Scroll through the Parent’s Settings menu anytime you need to configure any of these.

What to Do If the Screen Doesn’t Respond to the Stylus

If your Leapster Explorer still has screen issues after a factory reset, you can try calibrating the screen. It’s more involved than a factory reset, but it’s nothing scary. Just do the following:

Step 1

Your Leapster Explorer ships with a screen protector. In order for you to calibrate the screen, you need to remove this protective layer. This is so as to maximize the touchscreen’s responsiveness. Peel off the screen protector and proceed to the next step.

Step 2

Turn the Leapster Explorer off. You can only get into screen calibration if you start with the device turned off.

Step 3

While holding down the question mark button (located just above the big A button on the right side of the device), turn the device on. Continue holding the question mark button until the device is turned on and you see the calibrating screen.

Step 4

On the calibrating screen, touch the crosshair icon with the stylus. After that, a large crosshair will appear in the center of the screen. Touch it to start screen calibration.

Step 5

Proceed to touch each of the crosshairs with the stylus as they appear. There should be five in total. When the calibration is completed, simply press the B button to exit.

The screen should respond properly now. If it still doesn’t, consider contacting customer service. If your Leapster Explorer is still under warranty, your problem should get taken care of one way or another.

Removing Apps to Free up Space

Maybe your device is unresponsive or laggy because you have too many apps. If your Explorer is working sluggishly, and you know that there are many apps installed, you can delete some of them to free up space. Here’s how to do this:

  1. Connect your device to Leapfrog Connect.
  2. Once connected, choose the profile name that you wish to access on the home screen.
  3. Choose the On This Explorer tab
  4. A list of installed apps will appear. Just uncheck the box next to the apps that you want to remove.
  5. Click Save Changes and wait for your device to stop syncing before unplugging.

Exploring the Conclusions

The Leapfrog Explorer is an amazing device for kids to play and learn at the same time. Like most electronic devices, your Explorer may act up occasionally. We hope this guide has helped you resolve some of those issues, and if there’s something else you need help with, let us know in the comments!
