It’s clear that Fujitsu Siemens has attempted to address some of the criticisms levelled at its previous business ultraportable, the U9200. At first glance, the two laptops look pretty similar, but the U9210 is a vast improvement.
The U9210 is no beauty, but its new chiselled, clean lines are more alluring than its predecessor’s squat curves. And its rugged looks also belie a chassis that now feels resilient.
It isn’t as light as some of the true ultraportables on test, but at 2.11kg, it’s still fairly portable. That’s a good thing, too, as the embedded 3G modem and five-hour battery life make the U9210 a good go-anywhere business laptop.
There’s a full complement of Centrino 2 hardware. An Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 is partnered with 2GB of DDR3 memory, and it’s a combination that earns 1.18 in our benchmarks. That’s some way behind other laptops here with the same processor, but this is partially because the 2GB of memory is supplied as a single stick. The flipside is that this makes it easy to add an extra couple of gigabytes in the future.
Similarly, the lack of a fingerprint scanner is a shame, but businesses will appreciate the smart card reader.
So, why the average score then? The short answer: ergonomics. First, the keyboard is cramped, and its key action too light and indistinct. Second, the somewhat dull colour reproduction of the display fails to impress.
The U9210 is a sturdy, powerful business portable. The embedded 3G is a surprising addition, but isn’t enough to warrant a recommendation.
