How to add Google’s I’m Feeling Lucky Option to Your Chrome Search Engines

Although it’s been a part of the Google search page since the earliest days, some people still don’t know what the I’m Feeling Lucky button does. It’s very simple – it just takes you to the first search result found for your keyword. Pressing this button with a keyword entered automatically opens the first page in the search results. So it can be a handy shortcut to use, and now there is a way to set up your Google Chrome search box (otherwise known as the address bar) to search with I’m Feeling Lucky.

How to add Google's I'm Feeling Lucky Option to Your Chrome Search Engines

Click the menu button at the top right of your Chrome window and select Settings. Then scroll down that page a little to the Search options and select Manage search engines

Then click the “Add” button at the top of the “Other Search Engines” section to bring up a dialog allowing you to add a new search engine.

Under “Search Engine”, type “I’m Feeling Lucky”. Under keyword, type whatever keyword you’d like to use to indicate to Google Chrome that you want to use this particular search engine. You might type “Lucky” here, for example. Then in the URL section, enter “{google:baseURL}search?q=%s&btnI=Im+Feeling+Lucky”.  Hit “Add” and you’re all done.

Using your new “I’m Feeling Lucky” search engine is simple. Just type whatever keyword you chose into the address bar, and then hit the Tab key. The address bar will change to a blue font and will now say “Search I’m Feeling Lucky |”. Type whatever search you want into the address bar and hit return; Google will bring you directly to the first search result for your keyword.

So now you can do some quick searches with the I’m Feeling Lucky option from your Google Chrome search box. Note that this trick won’t work on mobile browsers.
