How To Sell Items in Runescape

In RuneScape, every player has to know how to buy and sell items from other players. In-game shops can be expensive and selling to them isn’t as profitable. Shops also carry limited items per day after an update, which means that they now become first-come, first served.

How To Sell Items in Runescape

Through the Grand Exchange, however, players can trade with other players for their valuable loot or resources. In this article, you’re going to learn about the intricacies of selling items in RuneScape. We’ll also answer some of your burning questions.

Free players are limited to three slots for buying and selling. Members will instead be granted eight slots. These slots are for tradeable items only, as non-tradeable items can’t be transferred to anyone else.

Whether you’re a free player or member, you don’t need to actively wait for others to buy from you. This is also the case for buying; meeting up with the seller isn’t necessary at all. Once someone buys your wares, you’ll receive your coins or items in any bank and certain Bank Chests.

You’ll also receive a message in your chatbox notifying you of a successful sale. That’s when you’ll find it prudent to head to the bank.

The Grand Exchange also refers to where the trading system is located. It’s a sort of official marketplace for trade between players. After some updates, the Grand Exchange received its current form.

Today, there are four branches, located in the following locations:

  • Northwestern Varrock
  • Tower of Voices in Prifdinnas
  • Max Guild in Prifdinnas
  • Merchant District of Menaphos

Go to the Grand Exchange Area

Before you’re allowed to buy and sell through the Grand Exchange, you need to reach the Grand Exchange Area first. There are many ways to reach it, and free players don’t have the extra options members have. As such, members tend to travel to the Grand Exchange Area faster than free players.

Here are the methods available to all players:

  • Teleport to Varrock via spell or Lodestone Network and walking to the Area.
  • Teleport to the Air Altar and then walk northeast.
  • Row your way near the Area from the Barbarian Village Station and then travel northeast.
  • Use a Skull Scepter to teleport outside of the Stronghold of Security, cross the bridge to the east and then walk north-east.

If you’re a member, these methods are open to you:

  • Directly teleport to the Grand Exchange Area using a ring of wealth, luck of the dwarves, Hazelmere’s signet ring, or ring of fortune.
  • Teleport to Edgeville with your preferred method and crawl under the Grand Exchange Area’s northwestern wall, requiring Level 21 Agility.
  • Travel to the northwest trapdoor of the Grand Exchange Area via minecart from Keldagrim.
  • Use the spirit tree system to reach the Spirit Tree at the Grand Exchange Area’s tree in the northeast corner.
  • The Grand Exchange clerks in the Tower of Voices and Max Guild teleport you to the Area in Varrock for free.

Once you reach the Grand Exchange Area, head inside. There are people you must meet before you can trade.

Find Either the Grand Exchange Tutor or Brugsen Bursen

Once you reach the Grand Exchange Area, you can locate the Grand Exchange Tutor or Brugsen Bursen. Both men can be found in front of the Grand Exchange building. They stand across each other, and both offer tutorials to trading with the Grand Exchange.

In comparison, Brugsen’s tutorial is more entertaining, but it also has more information. If you’re not in a hurry to learn about the intricacies of the Grand Exchange, the basic information you get from the Grand Exchange Tutor will suffice.

Once you go through the tutorial, you’re granted permission to use the Grand Exchange and trade with others according to your needs and make profits.

If you wish to trade with the RuneScape Companion app, you need to speak to the Grand Exchange Tutor first. After this, you’ll be allowed to trade with others on the go and away from your PC.

Consult Your Item Market Price With Experts

In the Grand Exchange Area, there are many more non-player characters (NPCs) other than Brugsen and the Tutor. There are bankers and Grand Exchange Clerks as well. However, they aren’t the experts you’re looking for.

These experts are spread out across the Grand Exchange Area, and they can tell you the market price of certain wares. Here is a list of their names and what they can do for you:

  • Ore prices are shown by Farid Morrisane.
  • Log prices are shown by Relobo Blinyo.
  • Herb prices are shown by Bob Barter, and he can also decant potions into full or empty vials, even if the potions are noted.
  • Rune prices are shown by Murky Matt, and he can “decant” any charged item into full or empty charges.
  • Some weapon and armor prices are shown by Hofuthand.

These five NPCs can be found in Varrock, but the two below are located in the Tower of Voices:

  • In the Tower of Voices, herb prices are shown by Rhobert Dail, and he can also decant potions.
  • The Grand Exchange Clerks here can’t tell you prices, but they can teleport you to Varrock with a chat option.

These special NPCs can’t be found in the Max Guild, however. Only normal Clerks and bankers are found in this area.

After you consult the Clerks, it’s time to start trading.

Right-Click on an Exchange Clerk and Click on “Exchange”

In any of the Grand Exchange Areas, you can approach a Grand Exchange Clerk. Right-click on them and you’ll be presented with the option to Exchange. Select it and choose what to sell.

One of the other options is to collect the items you bought from a trade. Every time you purchase something from another player, you need to retrieve it from the Clerk. Bankers are another option if you want to collect your trade items.

Another option is to dissemble item sets. These are sets of items that behave like a single item but must be dissembled before you can wear or use them. Clerks can do so for free and for unlimited times.

If you want to make an item set, Clerks are also capable of it, for free and unlimited times per day. As mentioned, you can’t do anything with sets except trading them with other players before disassembly.

Sell Item

After you’ve decided what to sell, pick a price as well. The special NPCs in the area serve as a great guide to help you price your items. You don’t want to overcharge buyers or you’ll have difficulty selling. Keep both the market price and street price of your items in mind.

You can sell as many items as you want, provided you have enough slots to trade with. As mentioned, members have eight slots, which allows them to put more items on the Grand Exchange at once. Free players only have three, which is why they find trading slower and less efficient than members.

Wait for a Message to Let You Know That a Trade Has Been Completed

After you’ve put your items on the market, you can go and do anything you want. Kill some bosses, talk to friends, or even leave the desk for a while. You’ll get a message in your chatbox to inform you that you successfully sold an item.

Additional FAQs

How many offers can I make?

Members can make eight selling offers at once, while free players are stuck with three. However, there is no limit as to how many offers you can make in a day. As long as you’re selling and have slots for more items to sell, you can sell until you run out of wares.

Should I sell in the general store or grand exchange?

Not always, as using the Grand Exchange to sell is almost always better than selling to a General Store. General Stores often offer paltry amounts of gold compared to the player-run economy. If you don’t have the Grand Exchange unlocked yet, you’re stuck with selling to the General Stores in the interim.

That’s an Expensive Set

Now that you know how to sell items on RuneScape, you can make a profit off your loot. There are many items in demand, which grants you a stable way to receive some income in-game. Don’t sell to General Stores – they’re not going to give you your money’s worth.
