What Is an Agentic OS?

An agentic OS is an operating system designed to incorporate AI agents that are able to act on the user’s behalf. So, instead of the user having to follow the conventional steps involved in using their device – like clicking icons to open apps or copying and pasting text from one window to another – they can tell the AI what they need and let their agent do it for them.
To illustrate this with an example, let’s say that a user wants to check their work emails and respond to any urgent messages as their first course of action to start a working day. On a conventional operating system, they’d have to do all of that manually. They’d have to open their email app, scan their inbox, read messages one by one to assess their importance, type out replies, and so on.
On an agentic OS, they could issue a command to their AI agent, like “Check my emails and draft replies to anything urgent.” The AI could then do most of the hard work for the user, accessing their inbox, scanning all unread mail in seconds, and generating appropriate draft responses for the user to scan, edit (if necessary), and send.
The Benefits and Challenges

There are numerous benefits associated with agentic OS technology, like the fact that it eases the users’ burden, making day-to-day tasks much simpler. With an agentic OS, users will save time and be able to prioritize and organize their activities more efficiently. This has many positive ramifications for the business world, where workers could get much more done, more quickly than ever before.
At the same time, agentic OS platforms bring new challenges. There will be learning curves associated with this technology, and questions are being asked about the security implications of letting AI agents access more data and use different applications. There are also issues of accountability – who would be held liable if the AI made a mistake, for example?
What This Means for the Future of AI
The emergence of agentic OS essentially signals that AI is set to play a more fundamental and active role in operating systems and devices in the future. We can expect new generations of computers to be released with agentic systems. Microsoft, for example, has already announced that future versions of Windows will be agentic, with tech enthusiasts eagerly awaiting more Windows agentic OS news.
Enthusiasts should also expect AI agents to play greater roles in the working world, with businesses relying on them to take on more tasks and automate more day-to-day workflows as the technology improves.
